Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the position of Police Sergeant. Reporting to the Police Lieutenant, the Police Sergeant serves as the first-line supervisor for their assigned shift within the George Washington Police Department ( GWPD). This position supervises the patrol division and is responsible for providing protection of persons and property on campus of George Washington University by utilizing police skills and patrolling techniques to maintain a safe environment. The Sergeant provides security and protection to the University community, by patrolling areas or buildings to enforce D.C. laws and GW administrative ordinances, to include providing on-site supervision over officers during emergency and routine situations during a shift.
This position manages the preparation of daily assignments and the weekly duty roster, based upon observation and assessment of individual officer skills/performance levels, relative to scheduled protective services activities or special requests. Acts on behalf of the Lieutenant during his/her absence, to include approving and posting the weekly duty roster, or special assignments. The Sergeant will also serve as a liaison with other departments during events or incidents and with outside law enforcement agencies.
Responsibilities and duties:

  • Provide faculty, staff and students highly efficient and professional protection and service by being present and interacting with the campus community
  • Oversees the day-to-day activities of the University's community law enforcement services
  • Works with the Shift Lieutenant for appropriate scheduling of officers to ensure adequate shift coverage, vacation relief, and call-off replacement. May coordinate and schedule additional security at various special activities and events on campus, as needed
  • Partners with the Shift Lieutenant to plan and execute shift meetings, roll call, to ensure overall information is shared with assigned shifts
  • Participates in reviewing and updating GWPD's policies and procedures. Provides subject matter expertise to ensure they are accurate and enforceable
  • Assists in the evaluation and recommendation of new equipment, supplies or special materials to improve security enforcement
  • Conducts Performance Management evaluations of officers for their assigned shift and assists the Shift Lieutenant in determining future staffing needs
  • Monitors and ensures staff compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Reviews body worn and in-car camera video associated with incident reports prior to approving reports to ensure compliance with department policy
  • Ensures all Community Policing activities are appropriately and timely documented in ARMS for tracking and review
  • Reviews all necessary administrative forms/reports related to Public Safety incidents and operations approve reports written and submitted by officers, and assists Security Officers, as needed
  • Ensures reports are completed accurately and timely
  • Testifies in court or administrative hearings concerning violations or offenses
  • Liaises with law enforcement staff regarding crime prevention measures
  • Attends and participates in various meetings pertaining to Community Policing operations and services
  • May serve on special assignments such as but not limited to: Recruitment, Training, Evidence/Property and Crime Prevention
  • Perform the requisite duties of Campus Police Officer as needed, and may be required to work weekends, holidays and/or different shifts than regularly assigned


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/ GED plus 5 years of relevant professional experience as a police officer; internally or within a federal, state, military, or municipality to include at least three years of functional supervisory experience is necessary, or, a Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus one year of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Must meet the requirements to possess a SPO License through DC's Metropolitan Police Department, Security Officers Management Branch ( SOMB) as described in DC Municipal Regulations Title 6-A, Chapter 11 within 120 days of employment.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to possess and maintain a District of Columbia Special Police Commission and meet the prescribed requirements and qualifications associated with commission to include firearms and other weapon systems.
  • Prior to employment, the final candidate will need to successfully complete a physical, drug screen and mental examination, which has been approved by the GW Police Department.
  • Must have completed an accredited state or federal law enforcement training academy to include the District of Columbia.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles as per University Policy for entire duration of employment within this role.
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age as required by the MPD, SOMB.
  • Maintain proficiency with firearms and police equipment and weaponry throughout the duration of employment.
  • Must be available to work rotating shifts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of criminal law, rules, and the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act Experience in a University or comparable non-profit environment is preferred.

Hiring Range $66,010.50 - $87,387.58
