Position description

The Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine is recruiting for a full-time faculty member in the Professor of Clinical X or Health Sciences Clinical Professor series at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank in Gastroenterology. Faculty in the Clinical X series is expected to engage in professional competence and activity, teaching, research and creative work, and University/public service. Faculty in the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series are expected to engage in teaching, professional competence and activity, scholarly or creative activities, and University/public service.

The successful applicant will be primarily dedicated to providing general hepatology care, teaching, and research. Clinical responsibilities will include providing hepatology outpatient consultations and endoscopic procedures and sharing the duties of the inpatient Hepatology/Liver Transplant Service. Educational responsibilities will include supervision of consultations and procedures by fellows, residents, and medical students as well as providing lectures to various audiences. For the Clinical X appointment, the applicant must have the ability to develop and implement investigator-initiated research, obtain extramural funding, and conduct collaborative science as a team member and leader. For the HSCP appointment, the applicant must have the ability to make significant contributions to research teams. Typically, more research effort is allocated to faculty in the Clinical X series, dependent on performance and funding.

This recruitment is conducted at the assistant/associate rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant/associate rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.

UC Davis Health serves a 65,000-square-mile area that includes 33 counties and 6 million residents across Northern and Central California. The UC Davis Medical Center is a 600-plus bed hospital with further expansion ongoing including an innovation hub known as Aggie Square and the 14-story California Tower addition to the UC Davis Medical Center. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology currently includes 27 physician faculty and staff, including 5 hepatologists, 4 NPs, and 10 fellows (increasing to 13). The division provides services at 5 clinics and 5 ambulatory endoscopy units in the Sacramento region. Clinical research within the division is supported by the GI Clinical Research Unit which includes 8 research coordinators and staff supporting over 50 studies. The division has a long-standing history of providing outstanding patient care and medical education focused on the training of GI Fellows.

Appointees to the Clinical X series are required to engage in creative activity that can include clinical/translational research, teaching, patient care and university service. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in research productivity, a defined area of research interest, track record of teaching and mentorship, and outstanding skills in hepatology care.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. or D.O. or equivalent degree
  • Strong clinical skills and interest in hepatology
  • Able to work cooperatively and collegially within a diverse environment.


Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

  • Must be board certified or eligible in Gastroenterology.
  • Medical licensure or eligible for licensure in the state of California
  • Must have completed a ACGME accredited fellowship or equivalent experience
  • Teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level
