Lab Assistant-Paramedic/EMT (EMS)

Hourly Rate: $21.01

The Lab Assistant is responsible for providing support to the EMS instructors by proctoring exams, preparing demonstrations, organizing supplies/equipment, observing, assisting students with lab practices, and testing.

The Lab Assistant is a part-time, 19-hour-per-week appointment on a schedule established by the EMS Program Director. The position involves handling confidential information and records. The Lab Assistant must be able to work independently and effectively prioritize tasks.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintain computer lab environment.
  • Serve as proctor for examinations and uphold online test taking rules and regulations.
  • Prepare laboratory environments for instruction by assembling necessary resources.
  • Assist instructors, answer questions, and direct students to resources.
  • Disassemble and store equipment; operate audio-visual equipment.
  • Notify the EMS Program Director or Clinical Coordinator of equipment repair, maintenance, and replacement needs.
  • Coordinate with other campus departments to troubleshoot problems.
  • Manage the EMS labs in compliance with College safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Previous experience of at least two (2) years in a prehospital agency or similar environment.
  • Valid licensure as a Paramedic in Illinois.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check with fingerprinting.
  • Verbal and mathematical abilities sufficient to organize the efficient use of the laboratory, operation of computers and software, and effective communication.
  • Ability to learn the computer laboratory resources and new programs and equipment as technology changes.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with no assistance.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
