Foley & Lardner LLP is seeking a patent agent with 1-2 years of relevant patent prosecution experience to join the firm's pre-eminent, national Intellectual Property Department's Electronics Practice Group in our Silicon Valley office. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with inventors and in-house legal teams at innovative companies as they seek patent protection for new technologies and develop high-value patent portfolios.
The patent agent will prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications involving sophisticated electronics and software technologies. Responsibilities will include interviewing inventors, analyzing technical disclosures, drafting patent specifications and claims, preparing responses to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office actions, conducting prior art and patentability analyses, and supporting portfolio-development strategies. The work may involve technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, software, semiconductors, communications and networking systems, wireless and optical systems, medical devices, and other emerging technologies. Qualified candidates must hold an undergraduate or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field. Advanced engineering degrees are preferred but not required. Candidates should have 1-2 years of experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications, preferably in a law firm setting, and must be registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. We are seeking individuals with strong academic backgrounds, excellent written and oral communication skills, sound analytical and organizational abilities, careful attention to detail, and an eagerness to confront new challenges and responsibilities. The successful candidate should be able to understand complex technologies, translate technical concepts into clear and precise written work, manage multiple assignments and deadlines, and collaborate effectively with inventors, clients, attorneys, and other members of the practice. In support of transparency and equity in the workplace, Foley provides salary ranges for all positions. The expected salary range for this position is between $120,000 - $150,000. Actual pay will be determined based on education, experience, internal pay equity at Foley, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
