POSITION OVERVIEW

2027 Summer Internship

Overview:

The MCCOE Intern role is designed to be a meaningful, hands-on learning experience where the intern contributes to building a new national model for dementia support. The goal is for the intern to leave the experience not only with increased knowledge, but also with real-world experience helping shape education, research, and innovation in dementia support.

What the Intern Would Assist With

  1. Education & Training Development
  • Assist in developing educational resources, training materials, presentations, facilitator guides, and learning activities that support the MCCOE's person-focused approach to dementia. Projects may include Dementia Essentials, neuroscience education, communication strategies, and practical tools for team members across departments.
  • Gather feedback from staff and residents to ensure education reflects lived experiences, while also supporting the development of data-informed systems that capture trends, measure impact, and guide ongoing MCCOE curriculum and program improvements.
  1. Research & Innovation Projects
  • Assist with literature reviews and environmental scans on topics such as music and memory, virtual reality experiences, person-focused dementia support, and other emerging approaches that could contribute to MCCOE initiatives.
  • Assist with gathering, organizing, and reviewing information related to MCCOE initiatives, including resident experiences, engagement, clinical outcomes, and operational measures, to help identify trends and opportunities for continued improvement.
  • Help document best practices that can become part of the MCCOE model and contribute to the development of future resources, education, and programming.
  • Explore neuroscience-based approaches to dementia support, including the importance of retained abilities, sensory strengths, environmental adaptations, and meaningful engagement in supporting people living with dementia.
  1. Dementia Advisory Board Support
  • Support the development and coordination of the Dementia Advisory Board, helping ensure that the perspectives, experiences, and recommendations of people living with dementia and their care partners inform MCCOE initiatives. Responsibilities may include preparing accessible materials, assisting with meetings, documenting feedback, and identifying opportunities to incorporate recommendations into programs and resources.
  1. Conference & Outreach Support
  • Assist with planning and coordinating educational conferences, presentations, and outreach initiatives associated with the MCCOE and Alois Memory Care Institute. Opportunities may include developing poster presentations, preparing educational materials, supporting professional events, and contributing to collaborative initiatives with academic and community partners.
  1. Resource Development
  • Create practical tools and resources for staff and families, which may include communication guides, connection checklists, sensory support ideas, and other resources that help support people living with dementia.
  • Help develop research summaries and educational materials that can be used to share MCCOE learnings and best practices nationally.
  1. Applied Learning & Resident Experience
  • Participate in supervised observational and learning experiences within the MCCOE neighborhood to better understand how neuroscience, environmental design, individualized routines, communication, and meaningful engagement influence the daily experiences of people living with dementia. The intern may also assist with projects that connect research and education to practical implementation.

Projects the Intern May Lead or Manage

  • Depending on the intern's interests, academic background, and length of placement, the intern may have the opportunity to lead a defined project and present findings or recommendations to the MCCOE team at the conclusion of the internship.

Qualifications

  • Students pursuing degrees in gerontology, psychology, neuroscience, nursing, public health, healthcare administration, social work, occupational therapy, or related fields.

Desired Skills

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, curiosity and willingness to learn, and a genuine interest in supporting people living with dementia while working collaboratively across different disciplines and areas of expertise.
