What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Engineering and Operations Systems Engineer to provide systems-engineering expertise in support of asset management for mission-critical operations across Centers 7400 and 7500 (Neutron Generator & Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise, Power Sources Technology Group, Explosives Technology Group, Advanced Produce Realization, and CAMINO). You will leverage systems thinking and established algorithmic evaluation of equipment health given a multivariable landscape, diverse infrastructure needs and conditions, and complex, high-value support of various missions. Use systems-engineering approaches, objective risk/opportunity evaluations, and rigorous data integrity to drive recapitalization and sustainment decisions on a rolling basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Employ structured systems-engineering methods to model interactions among equipment, infrastructure, and enabling systems, ensuring integrated solutions aligned with mission objectives.
  • Document and track component- and system-level performance requirements; develop acceptance criteria, verification plans, and evidentiary packages.
  • Apply algorithm-governed risk/opportunity evaluations to assess equipment health, maintenance needs, and recapitalization urgency and viability.
  • Develop and maintain a rolling 5-year recapitalization and enabling-infrastructure roadmap, updated annually, in alignment with budget constraints and strategic mission priorities.
  • Identify, document, and coordinate requirements for infrastructure improvements needed to enable equipment capability and operational readiness.
  • Ensure data integrity and traceability across programmatic assets, maintenance, and financial systems by identifying gaps, defining corrective actions, and maintaining audit trails.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, equipment owners/users, maintenance organizations, facilities teams, finance, and leadership to define integrated system requirements, multi-year schedules, and resource-loaded budgets.
  • Document and track project risks; interface with stakeholders to develop and implement mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Perform high-level analysis, testing, and verification of system functionality to confirm compliance with performance requirements.
  • Interface with customers and system implementation teams to ensure deliverables meet operational needs and user expectations.
  • Develop deployment and logistics plans; prepare training materials and documentation to support system handover and sustainment.

Due to the nature of work, successful candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q level security clearance
  • Knowledge of systems engineering development tools, techniques, and management.
  • Ability to partner with customers and technically direct the efforts of a cross-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to review and understand end-to-end work processes.
  • Ability to work closely with customers and suppliers to define expectations and mutual responsibilities.
Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline
  • Experience supporting high-consequence, mission-critical operations and/or complex manufacturing, energetic materials, power-source technologies, neutron generator operations, or similar environments.
  • Familiarity with reliability and maintenance concepts (condition-based maintenance, criticality, failure modes, obsolescence, sustainment planning).
  • Experience working with enterprise data systems (asset databases, maintenance management systems, financial systems) and improving data-quality governance.
  • Experience with capital planning and recapitalization processes, including multi-year road-mapping and budget formulation.
  • Training or certification in systems engineering management (e.g., INCOSE CSEP) or project management (e.g., PMP) is advantageous.
  • Good understanding of the customers, the concept of operations for the system, and the mission capabilities and characteristics of the system.
  • Ability to model behaviors that reflect Sandia's core values.
About Our Team

The 7573-2 team coordinates equipment needs across multiple missions, and leads projects through specifications development, procurement, and characterization of equipment. Our team supports a wide range of complexity in equipment specifications and tool functionality. Including custom tools needed to support design and production functionality for Explosives Technologies, Power Source Technology, and Neutron Generator missions. In this role, you will help ensure Sandia's mission organizations can sustain and modernize critical equipment capabilities, using consistent, defensible, and transparent methods to:

  • Improve prioritization of maintenance and recapitalization investments
  • Align equipment strategy with mission objectives and constrained budgets
  • Strengthen leadership decision-making through trusted data and clear communication
  • Reduce operational risk from aging and complex infrastructure
Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
