Mead & Hunt is looking for a senior CE&I leader to help grow and strengthen our South Carolina transportation construction practice.

This is not a traditional project engineer role. It is a visible leadership position for someone who understands SCDOT construction, knows how to lead field teams, works well with contractors and agency partners, and can bring credibility to both active projects and future pursuits.

Why Mead & Hunt:

Mead & Hunt offers the stability and resources of a nationally recognized consulting firm with the ownership mindset of a 100% employee-owned company. We invest in our people, value practical decision-making, and build long-term relationships with the clients and communities we serve.

For the right person, this role offers more than a project assignment. It is an opportunity to help shape Mead & Hunt's CE&I presence in South Carolina, lead meaningful transportation work, and have a direct voice in how we grow in the market.

What You'll Do:

As a Resident Construction Engineer, you will lead construction engineering and inspection efforts for SCDOT transportation projects supporting our Lexington, SC office and project locations throughout South Carolina. You will oversee construction administration, inspection teams, contractor coordination, documentation, materials compliance, quality, schedule, issue resolution, and project closeout.

You will also support future pursuits and proposal efforts, helping Mead & Hunt position the right teams, technical approach, and key personnel for upcoming transportation work across South Carolina.

Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as a senior CE&I project leader for SCDOT roadway, bridge, interchange, widening, interstate, or related transportation construction projects.
  • Lead the project management structure responsible for coordinating inspectors, field staff, office engineers, document control support, subconsultants, and other project team members.
  • Act as a trusted point of contact with SCDOT, contractors, teaming partners, and internal Mead & Hunt leadership.
  • Oversee all aspects of construction project management with support from the management team, including construction administration, field inspection, materials documentation, pay quantities, daily reports, project records, change orders, and closeout documentation.
  • Monitor contractor work for compliance with plans, specifications, quality expectations, schedule, traffic control, environmental commitments, and safety requirements.
  • Help resolve field issues, contractor questions, documentation gaps, quality concerns, and project delivery risks.
  • Support pursuit strategy, proposal development, technical approach, and keyperson positioning for future South Carolina transportation opportunities.
  • Drive business growth by identifying opportunities and building relationships that strengthen Mead & Hunt's presence in the region.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field from an accredited four-year college or university plus at least eight years of relevant experience, or equivalent.
  • Professional Engineer license required.
  • Experience leading or managing DOT transportation construction projects.
  • Experience overseeing contractors, inspection teams, subconsultants, project documentation, materials compliance, and construction administration.
  • Strong knowledge of roadway, bridge, interchange, interstate widening, or related transportation construction projects.
  • Ability to work from South Carolina project locations as needed.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for project and pursuit needs.

The ideal candidate will have experience with any/all of the following:

  • South Carolina PE, or ability to obtain South Carolina licensure through comity.
  • Prior experience as a CEI Project Manager, Resident Construction Engineer, Senior Project Engineer, Construction Manager, or similar project leader.
  • Design-build transportation experience.
  • Experience working with SCDOT.
  • Structural bridge inspection background, with roadway experience as a plus.
  • Familiarity with SCDOT standards, specifications, QA/QC procedures, materials testing, project documentation, and closeout expectations.
  • Familiarity with materials testing processes, including the ability to oversee subcontractors and lead project materials discussions.
  • Experience with AASHTOWare, ProjectWise, SCDOT forms/documentation, or comparable DOT systems.
  • Proven budget management and cost-control experience, particularly within large-scale transportation projects.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to balance the priorities of DOT and contractor partners.
  • Experience supporting pursuits, proposals, technical approaches, or key-person interviews.
  • SCDOT inspector certifications.

If you are a CE&I leader who wants to stay close to meaningful transportation work while helping build something long-term in South Carolina, we'd love to hear from you, apply today!
