Registered Nurse (RN) - Duke Urgent Care Hillsborough

Duke University Health System seeks to hire an experienced Registered Nurse who will embrace our mission ofAdvancing Health Together.

Duke Urgent Care Hillsborough provides prompt, compassionate care for patients of all ages with minor injuries and illnesses, including sprains, cuts, flu symptoms, and infections. The clinic also offers sports physicals, limited employment physicals, and routine vaccinations. The team operates in a fast-paced, sometimes high-pressure setting, while maintaining a close-knit, collaborative environment. This team fosters a culture of open communication, professional growth, and mutual support.

Hours:8am - 8pm

Schedule: Three 12 hour shifts with rotating weekends, including holidays

What You Will Do

As a Clinical Nurse III, you'll deliver advanced, patient-centered care while serving as a clinical leader, mentor, and advocate for excellence within your unit. This role offers the opportunity to practice at the top of your license, influence patient care outcomes, support the development of fellow nurses, and contribute to initiatives that advance nursing practice across the organization.

In this role, you will:



  • Provide expert nursing care to patients and their families, utilizing evidence-based practice and clinical judgment to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and leader, helping to identify patient care needs and contributing to the development of care standards, patient education, and staff development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to promote quality, safety, and exceptional patient experiences.
  • Lead or participate in unit-based quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical practice initiatives that drive measurable improvements in care delivery.
  • Support the professional growth of team members through mentoring, coaching, precepting, and role modeling professional nursing practice.
  • Participate in shared governance, department committees, educational programs, research activities, and other initiatives that advance nursing excellence and patient outcomes.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and collaboration while supporting organizational and departmental goals.
  • Provide guidance on the effective use, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical equipment, supplies, and resources to support high-quality patient care.
  • Identify opportunities to improve processes, workflow efficiency, and patient outcomes while assisting with the implementation of best practices.
  • Maintain a safe care environment by recognizing potential risks, supporting compliance initiatives, and championing patient safety efforts.
  • Practice within the scope of the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the standards established by the DUHS Nursing Clinical Ladder Program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education



  • Graduation from an accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is required.


Exception: Registered Nurses hired between July 1, 2014, and April 11, 2021, without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) are encouraged to enroll in an appropriate BSN program within two years of their start date and complete the program within seven years of hire. Registered Nurses hired before July 1, 2014, are not required to enroll in a BSN program to remain in this job classification.

Experience



  • Candidates must meet all requirements established by the DUHS Nursing Career Ladder Program for Clinical Nurse Level III.



Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification



  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or a compact RN license.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.

  • Advanced knowledge of professional nursing theory, practice, and patient care standards.
  • Strong understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and unlicensed healthcare personnel.
  • Expertise in applying the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Ability to assess and respond to the needs of acutely and chronically ill patients and their families.
  • Strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills with patients, families, physicians, leadership, and colleagues.
  • Commitment to patient and family education that supports informed care decisions and positive outcomes.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of routine and specialized patient care procedures and treatments.
  • Understanding of infection prevention practices, patient safety standards, and regulatory requirements, including The Joint Commission (TJC).
  • Proficiency in electronic documentation systems and the ability to learn new technologies.
  • Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including prolonged standing, walking, and clinical care activities.
  • Successful completion of required pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing.
