Overview

The Data Center Fiber Technician I is responsible for assisting with the installation, termination, testing, and documentation of fiber optic cabling systems in mission-critical data center environments. This role performs work under the direction of senior technicians and project leads while maintaining compliance with BICSI standards, customer specifications, and safety requirements.


Responsibilities

  • Install and route single-mode and multimode fiber optic cabling.
  • Assist with fiber terminations and fusion splicing.
  • Pull, dress, secure, and label fiber optic cables.
  • Install patch panels, fiber enclosures, cassettes, and cable management systems.
  • Perform basic fiber testing using optical power meters, visual fault locators (VFL), and continuity testers.
  • Assist senior technicians with OTDR testing and troubleshooting.
  • Read and interpret basic construction drawings and cable schedules.
  • Maintain proper bend radius and cable routing standards.
  • Complete labeling and documentation in accordance with project requirements.
  • Follow all customer, BICSI, OSHA, and site safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Assist with inventory management and material staging.

Qualifications

  • BICSI Installer 1 (INST1) Certification
  • 1-3 years of structured cabling or fiber optic installation experience.
  • Basic knowledge of fiber optic installation practices.
  • Ability to identify fiber color codes.
  • Experience using hand tools and basic fiber installation equipment.
  • Ability to read basic blueprints and cable schedules.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn.
