Summary: Responsible for the effective, efficient and safe functioning and all day-to-day operations of the UNC Children's Hospital inpatient play facilities. The play facilities at the UNC Children's Hospital include the play atrium, teen lounge, game room, patient isolation area, and Lookout Terrace (sunroom and outside roof top area). These facilities are used by our pediatric patient to include immunocompromised and medically fragile patients. Assists with training, supervision, and evaluation of volunteers for these areas. Responsibilities: 1. Supervises and ensures daily standards of operation. Inspects equipment and play facilities each morning and at various points throughout the day to maintain infection prevention standards and safety compliance, and addresses all negative findings. 2. Consults with Child Life staff to coordinate patient care needs for receiving therapeutic play services for the day. 3. Collaborates with nursing and other ancillary staff to coordinate patient care needs and daily scheduling for one-on-one services; provides 1:1 care for immunocompromised patients or patients with other special medical conditions. 4. Creates 1:1 patient schedule weekly and updates needs daily. 5. Staff Lead during open play sessions for patients, families, and staff. Supervises 4-6 volunteers per session to work with patients in the facilities as well as one-on-one in patient rooms. 6. Staff Lead during open play sessions for patients, families, and staff. Utilizes Epic to access pertinent patient information through the medical record (as needed) to plan and develop therapeutic activities for patients, and to maintain safety and infection prevention for pediatric patients in the play facilities. Also responsible for utilizing the HUGs security system within the Children's Hospital as required by Hospital policy. 8. Manage and coordinate the appropriate pairing of volunteers with patients for individual and/or group sessions. Coaches volunteers on effective strategies/activities to utilize with patients. 9. Manages the medical status of multiple patients and their medical equipment simultaneously within multiple rooms throughout the play facilities. Responds as needed to alarming medical equipment (e.g. IV poles) and resolves either directly or by consulting with nursing staff. 10. Facilitates 1:1 therapeutic play activities with patients in and out of their patient room. 11. Provides resources to assist with adjustment to hospitalization and the healthcare environment. 12. Conducts orientation and training for new staff. 13. Conducts orientation and training for new volunteers- best practice for safely transporting pediatric patients with medical equipment, safe management of medical equipment, how to appropriately interact with pediatric patients, and how to sanitize/disinfect equipment and resources in accordance with hospital policy. 14. Collaborates with the other staff in regards to scheduling, coverage and other pertinent information. 15. Manages daily operations of the play facilities; monitoring safety and functionality of equipment, coordinating and supervising volunteers (between 4-6 each session) throughout the day for a total of approximately 18 volunteers per day. In addition, supervises university and community groups that volunteer within the play facilities. 16. Monitors resources and budget needs for purchases of equipment and resources and provides recommendations for needed purchases to manager.

Other information: Education Requirements: * High school diploma or general educatioin degree (GED) required; some college experience or Bachelor's degree in a child or healthcare-related field (e.g. Recreational Therapy, Child Life, Child Development) preferred. Licensure/Certification Requirements: * Minimum of CPR certification required within 90-days of hire. BLS certification will satisfy CPR certification requirement. Professional Experience Requirements: * One (1) year of experience in childcare field/working with children and six (6) months of demonstrated leadership skills Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: * Working knowledge of: Infection prevention within the healthcare environment; Ability to respond to age-specific issues of the patient's status/medical condition to include neonate, infant, child, and adolescent; Effective communication skills used to discuss issues with adults/parents; General Microsoft computer knowledge; Competency in the use of EPIC and HUGs systems; Must exhibit excellent customer service and a positive attitude towards patients and families.
