THE POSITION

Become a Veterinary Medical Field Officer with the Department of Agriculture and help safeguard horse health and racing integrity. In this role, you will oversee medical procedures, observe horses before and after races, and support veterinarians and inspectors. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the health and safety of racehorses by supervising medical procedures, conducting inspections, and assisting with regulatory duties. The work involves monitoring horses before and after races and coordinating activities that protect animal well-being and racing integrity. As a Veterinary Medical Field Officer, you will perform the following duties:

  • Race Oversight: Observe horses before, during, and after races and determine fitness to compete
  • Medical Supervision: Oversee blood and urine sample collection and supervise bleeder medication activities
  • Emergency Response: Provide first aid, treat injuries, and assist with decisions regarding euthanasia when needed
  • Record Management: Maintain lists, reports, and documentation for inspections, medications, and veterinary decisions
  • Regulatory Duties: Assist with disease control, quarantine enforcement, inspections, and investigations under state regulations
  • Field Coordination: Work with inspectors, veterinarians, and racing officials to ensure compliance with rules and policies

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of professional experience as a veterinarian and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college or university.

Special Requirements:

  • All positions require possession of an active license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medicine.
  • All employees must obtain an active license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine within six months of hire.
  • All positions must obtain United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Category II Accreditation within six months of hire.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
