Job Purpose

As a Distribution Security Operator in the Electric Control Center, you will monitor and manage the distribution system in real time, ensuring safe and reliable operations through the use of advanced grid technologies. This is a unique opportunity to operate at the forefront of grid modernization, supporting the integration of distributed energy resources and the transition to a cleaner and more resilient power system. You will complete a structured initial and ongoing training program designed to prepare you for success in the control room environment.

Key Accountabilities

Accountable for the safe, secure, reliable, and efficient operation of National Grid's New England Distribution system, including:

* Conduct day-ahead and real-time analysis and implement action plans to address evolving system conditions

* Dispatch Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), Non-Wire Alternatives (NWAs), and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) to balance load and maintain system operating limits

* Monitor and manage real-time performance of distributed energy assets, including solar generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS)

* Coordinate planned, forced, and emergency outages with internal and external stakeholders

* Utilize advanced platforms, including Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), Distributed Energy Resources Management System (DERMS), and Predictive Operations Tools, to monitor and manage real-time and anticipated grid conditions

* Ensure distribution system equipment operates within established ratings

* Monitor system performance and data quality across control room tools, escalating issues as needed

* Obtain and maintain required certifications

* Collaborate effectively with Control Room Operations, Engineering, and Customer teams

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field preferred, or equivalent practical experience in electric operations, control room operations, or power systems.
  • Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment aptitude assessment
  • Willingness and ability to work a rotating shift schedule, supporting 24/7 operations
  • Flexibility to work overtime as required to meet operational, company, and customer needs
  • Strong understanding of electric distribution systems or related power system operations preferred
  • Experience or exposure in utility operations, ISO/RTO environments, SCADA systems, or similar real-time operational settings preferred
  • Familiarity with renewable energy and DER concepts, including PV and BESS preferred
  • Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced, real-time operational environment

As a Security Operator, you will be required to successfully pass the Electric Distribution Control Center Training Program, including the assessments and/or tests that are administered. Please be advised that unsuccessful completion or failure of the required training program including the tests may lead to disqualification and separation.

The Security Operator is a job family with expected progression through Operator, Senior, and Lead. Once hired, new Security Operators will receive comprehensive classroom and on the job training to prepare for this role.
