WSSU seeks a visionary leader to serve as its next Dean of the School of Health Sciences. Reporting to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Dean has the unique responsibility of positioning this academic unit for local, regional, and national acclaim and recognition, as a leading producers of students prepared to serve as 21st healthcare professionals. The Dean must be a visionary, experienced health or medical sciences professional, equipped with professional and academic leadership experiences to position the School of Health Sciences as a premier 21st academic unit at WSSU and beyond. The Dean must be a passionate leader, adaptable to the challenges of higher education and the field of health sciences. This leader must be able to successfully articulate a vision and mission for the College that aligns with current industry and workforce needs, along with the mission and values of WSSU and its current strategic plan.


The Dean must also be an authentic academic leader that is able to foster meaningful and lasting relationships with external stakeholders, the healthcare industry and community leaders. Moreover, the Dean serves as not only the College's chief academic officer but manages the unit's operating budget. It is essential that the next Dean be able to successfully align the budgetary appropriations of the College to the unit's strategic priorities.


WSSU has a longstanding history of producing qualified nurses. Nursing has been a staple academic program for the College; however, the next leader must be able to initiate a vision that is able to align healthcare industry workforce needs by developing new and exciting health sciences related academic programs. As the next leader is expected to set the vision for the future academic program offerings of the College, this leader must be able to manage existing academic programs and ensure that all regional and national accreditation standards are successfully achieved.


The Dean must bring to the position academic leadership experiences that foster a climate of innovative teaching and learning among the faculty, while promoting a spirit of collegiality, excellence in teaching, research, and service, which contributes to WSSU's strategic priority related to enhancing research opportunities and capacity for students and faculty.

Key Responsibilities of the Dean include:
Program Administration


  • Provide leadership, direction, and overall administration for the development, coordination, and implementation of programs, activities, and professional services.
  • Formulate, initiate, implement, and interpret policies relating to the operation of the School and the academic departments within the unit.
  • Establish strategic vision for the unit and articulate goals and objectives that will advance the School to achieve its outcomes.
  • Recruit and retain high-performing faculty and staff who are committed to the vision and mission of the unit and the University.
  • Partner with Enrollment Management, department chairs, and other constituents to develop strategies to recruit, enroll, and retain high-performing students, particularly from rural and low-income geographic regions, to ensure on-time degree completion.


Student Success

  • Support academic departments, centers, and programs within the School to integrate high impact practices (e.g., internships, research, study abroad) into curricular and co-curricular opportunities.
  • Partner with divisions, departments, and units across the university, particularly Student Affairs and the University College, to support student success initiatives.
  • Foster an environment of continuous improvement within the School whereby faculty and staff collect and analyze data on student performance then engage in explicit actions to improve instruction, programming, and activities that benefit student outcomes.
  • Incorporate programs, interventions, and mechanisms that assist students with their academic achievement and professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with other academic deans, unit and center directors, and other constituents to strategize, plan, execute, assess, and evaluate programs or activities that promote student success across undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Budgetary Management and Personnel Supervision

  • Plan, allocate, and adjust budgetary appropriations to align with the unit's strategic priorities.
  • Advocate for fiscal and human capital that positions the School to achieve its mission.
  • Partner with the Office of Faculty Affairs to recruit and retain talented faculty whose skills align with the university's Faculty for the Future Framework.
  • Partner with the Division of Human Resources to recruit and retain talented staff whose skills support student success.
  • Invest in the professional development of the unit's administrators (e.g., associate deans, department chairs), faculty, and staff to foster entrepreneurship, innovation, and sponsored research.

Advancement, Stewardship, and Public Relations

  • Cultivate new relationships with potential partners and nurture existing partnerships.
  • Collaborate with University Advancement, the academic departments, and other constituents to develop strategy for fundraising to meet the School's vision and mission.
  • Establish or sustain Advisory Boards for the School, academic departments, and research centers.
  • Work collaboratively with university administrators and faculty to create, schedule, and present workshops on research to undergraduate and graduate learners.
  • Partner with Integrated Marketing Communications to develop a bold and effective communications strategy that continuously highlights the achievements and contributions of the School's faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners.
  • Represent the School and the university across campus, within the community, and throughout the nation and world.

Department Required Skills

  • A doctoral degree in health sciences, public health, medicine (M.D.), nursing or a health-related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education. If the selected candidate possesses an M.D., partnerships may be available to have a medical practicing appointment at a local healthcare provider.
  • Academic record of teaching, research, service, and clinical experiences that position the candidate for rank of professor with tenure.
  • At least five years of experience as a leader within higher education (e.g., department chair, associate or assistant dean), or comparable experience within the healthcare sector as a healthcare professional with administrative leadership responsibilities.
  • Successful experience with budgeting and financial management.
  • Evidence of leading and navigating processes to achieve and sustain academic accreditation standards for health sciences related academic programs.
  • A record of experience managing recruiting, supporting and retaining talented faculty and staff.
  • Extensive record of scholarly achievement in teaching, research, scholarship and community engagement at an accredited four-year institution of higher education, along with evidence of mentoring faculty in these areas.
  • Demonstrated experience developing new workforce aligned academic programs.
  • Evidence of establishing community and corporate partnerships, particularly in the health sciences.
  • Ability to create a fundraising structure in concert with the Division of University Advancement, providing stewardship of financial resources procured by donors.
