Are you skilled at editing and writing for science or engineering? Do you enjoy corralling information on complex topics, collaborating with a diverse group of stakeholders and content owners, and bringing a new vision to reality? Are you interested in helping NASA improve the way it serves users of NASA Earth science data? If so, this is a new opportunity for you.

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. is looking to hire an experienced editor to join a digital strategy and user development team responsible for improving the experience of users who are seeking to discover, download, and use NASA Earth science data. This position will require you to develop and implement content strategies and edit long-form and short-form content with the goal of improving the discovery and use of Earth science data. You will be working within a well-established environment of content owners and stakeholders and navigating that environment will require managing divergent opinions while at the same time maintaining firm focus on the project vision.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit all content on the flagship website for serving NASA Earth science data;
  • Work with an improve editorial processes and workflows necessary to ensure content stays up to date, is coherently crafted, and logically presented;
  • Manage and coordinate editorial duties;
  • Author content (a mix of descriptive and technical writing) as necessary;
  • Develop intermediate to advanced knowledge of NASA Earth science data systems;
  • Work with subject matter experts within Earth science, technology, and information management.
  • Occasional travel will be required (about 5%)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in communications, library science, journalism, information systems or related field;
  • 5 years professional experience developing and executing content strategies for web;
  • Technical/web writing and editing experience;
  • Experience working in collaboration with other teams;
  • A proactive self-starter, showing initiative;
  • Ability to work and interact within a virtual team;
  • Understanding of Earth science concepts;
  • Experience using Earth science data (particularly from NASA);
  • US Citizenship Required

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining a website using a Content Management System (CMS);
  • Project management;
  • Understanding of taxonomies, ontologies, and information architecture (IA);
  • Experience using SmartSheets or a related tool for maintaining an editorial calendar that can be shared across multiple teams;
  • Experience working with scientists and engineers in creating communications projects
