What You Will Be Doing

The Legal Personnel and Recruitment Manager is responsible for all personnel-related programs and processes for attorneys in the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices. They build and manage relationships with lawyers to ensure successful programs and projects for the office. The Legal Personnel and Recruiting Manager is also responsible for all summer associate, entry level associate and post-judicial clerk hiring and will support local lateral hiring as needed. The Manager will also oversee and execute law school and law student outreach for our Palo Alto and San Francisco summer programs. They will also manage the Palo Alto and San Francisco Legal Personnel Department and oversee all administrative functions of the department.

The Legal Personnel and Recruitment Manager will work collaboratively with the broader Legal Personnel and Development Department, including the Director of Legal Personnel and Development and the Director of Legal Recruiting to achieve the Firm's talent management goals and objectives.

About This Role

Legal Personnel



  • Collaborates directly with firm management in the implementation of lawyer evaluation, retention, compensation and promotion programs and processes in the Palo Alto and San Franscisco offices and ensures excellent delivery of services through the Career Advancement Program.
  • Manages the semi-annual Associate, Senior Associate and Counsel review process. Semi-annual process includes working with Partners to review the collected feedback for lawyers from their respective practices, develop and facilitate Partner and Associate summary messages and delivery meetings, and follow-up with lawyers requiring coaching, mentoring, or training.
  • Serves as the main point of contact in the Palo Alto and San Franscisco offices for attorney onboarding, integration, promotion, transfers, offboarding and outplacement programs and efforts. Collaborates with department and office leadership regarding lawyer headcount in the Palo Alto and San Franscisco offices.
  • Responsible for counseling and managing all lawyer leaves and part-time arrangements.
  • Oversees local team support of various committees including the Women's Leadership Initiative, Parent's Group and the Associates Committee Task Force (ACTF). Will participate in meetings with lawyers and contribute to achieving the committee's goals and objectives.
  • Handles employee relations issues, serving as a resource and providing counsel, when appropriate, to all attorneys on personnel issues, leaves, career questions and employee relations matters.


Summer Associate Program



  • In collaboration with the Director, Legal Recruitment, successfully designs, manages, and evaluates all aspects of the firm's Summer Associate Program including, pre-arrival processes and communications, orientation, mentoring program with partners and associates, social and community service events, diversity events and initiatives, educational and special firm programming.
  • In conjunction with Hiring Partners, Summer Program Co-Chairs, and Practice Management, generates interest and solicits substantive summer associate work assignments and observational opportunities from the firm's practice areas and pro bono programs.
  • In conjunction with Hiring Partners and Director, Legal Recruitment, manages the evaluation and offer process for summer associates.


Law School and Judicial Clerk Recruitment



  • In collaboration with the Director, Legal Recruitment and Hiring Partners, effectively and efficiently manages the judicial clerk and law school student recruitment process including supporting efforts for the firm's branding initiatives and targeted law school communications.
  • With the Hiring Partners, leads the Hiring Committee and oversees successful on-campus and in-office interviewing, effective offer extension and follow up. Successfully meets hiring targets.
  • Ensures accuracy of recruitment data. Creates and maintains recruitment reports, metrics and analysis for internal and external purposes.
  • Responsible for ensuring consistent application of firm wide recruitment policies and procedures.
  • Proposes and implements strategy for law student outreach and law student intern program(s) through communications with law school placement offices, law student groups, email campaigns to 1Ls, and other means.


Lateral Attorney Hiring



  • In collaboration with the Director, Legal Recruitment and Lateral Recruitment Manager, locally manages aspects of the non-partner lateral attorney recruitment and onboarding processes.


General Responsibilities



  • In coordination with the operational Director, ensures localized implementation of the firm's strategic goals, objectives and initiatives. Assesses and measures effectiveness of same on the West Coast.
  • In collaboration with functional and operational leaders, ensures a smart and flexible Talent expense and headcount budget for the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices aligned with the firm's strategic goals, objectives and initiatives.
  • Manages monthly monitoring of accounts, anticipates and resolves discrepancies.
  • In coordination with the operational Director as appropriate, hires, develops, evaluates and compensates the Legal Personnel team in San Francisco and Palo Alto.
  • Ensures accuracy of recruitment and interview process data, and other compliance reporting.
  • Keeps abreast of industry trends and best practices.

  • Successful time management skills are required.
  • Strong technical skills on the following applications preferred: Excel, PowerPoint, LawCruit, Oracle and viDesktop.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities; excellent attention to detail; ability to take initiative and work independently.



Education:



  • Bachelor's degree required.



Experience:



  • A minimum of 8 years' relevant legal, personnel or recruitment experience along with prior management experience required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the legal profession and law firm structures.
