The Roads and Highways Practice is seeking an experienced Engineer / Project Engineer to join our California Roads & Highways team in our Ontario office.

This role is ideal for a licensed professional engineer who enjoys leading technical work, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to the delivery of significant transportation projects throughout California.

Under limited supervision, this position plans and conducts work requiring independent judgment, evaluation, and the adaptation of standard engineering techniques and procedures. The Engineer / Project Engineer typically serves as a task leader on mid-size to larger project elements and may occasionally manage small to mid-size projects in their entirety.

What You'll Do Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a task leader for roadway and highway design elements on significant transportation projects
  • Perform and oversee complex engineering analysis and design using established and modified techniques, procedures, and criteria
  • Prepare and review design deliverables including plans, specifications, estimates (PS&E), and technical reports
  • Coordinate with internal disciplines, clients, and external stakeholders to support project delivery
  • Apply professional judgment to solve non-routine design challenges and complete difficult assignments
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineering staff
  • May directly supervise staff and contribute to staff development and performance feedback
  • Support project managers with scope, schedule, and technical coordination as needed
  • Ensure work complies with Caltrans standards, local agency requirements, and applicable regulations
What You Bring Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license (California registration required or ability to obtain through reciprocity)
  • 7+ years of progressive engineering experience in transportation or roadway design
  • Strong working knowledge of roadway/highway engineering concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Experience completing complex assignments requiring independent judgment and technical decision-making
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Caltrans highway design experience and familiarity with Caltrans design standards and processes
  • Experience serving as a task lead on mid-size or larger transportation projects
  • Proficiency with roadway design software such as MicroStation/OpenRoads and/or Civil 3D
  • Experience coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Membership in professional organizations (ASCE, APWA, etc.)
