The Sihi Biogeochemistry Lab at North Carolina State University seeks a motivated and skilled computational scientist to support and advance research at the intersection of soil biogeochemistry and ecosystem modeling. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in R and Python programming, with applications in data analysis, statistical modeling, and machine learning for environmental and ecological systems.
This position offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research integrating field data, laboratory measurements, and computational models to better understand carbon and nutrient dynamics, soil health, and greenhouse gas emissions in natural and managed ecosystems.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, the successful candidate will:
- Develop, train, and evaluate machine learning models (e.g., regression, classification, time-series, and deep learning where appropriate) to analyze soil, plant, and ecosystem datasets
- Process, clean, integrate, and manage large, heterogeneous datasets from field measurements, laboratory experiments, and public environmental databases
- Apply AI/ML methods to predict soil carbon and nutrient dynamics, soil health indicators, and greenhouse gas fluxes
- Implement workflows in Python and/or R for reproducible data analysis, model development, and visualization
- Perform feature engineering, model validation, uncertainty analysis, and performance benchmarking
- Integrate machine learning outputs with process-based or ecosystem models to support biogeochemical research
- Create clear visualizations, summaries, and documentation of model results for publications, reports, and presentations
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to translate ecological research questions into computational and AI-driven solutions
- Maintain well-documented code using version control (e.g., Git) and follow best practices for reproducible research
