Collect, analyze and interpret geographic information provided by Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, aerial photographs, geodetic surveys, and satellite data. Research, study and prepare maps and other spatial data in digital or graphic form for mining and environmental purposes. Provide maps for Conditional Use Permit Applications (CUP), Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plans (SPCC) and mining equipment layout. Work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and web based GIS mapping systems(Currently using Geomoose).

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)



  1. Collect information about specific locations using GPS equipment, aerial photography and other digital remote sensing techniques
  2. Revise existing maps and charts, making all necessary corrections and adjustments
  3. Compile data required for map preparation, including aerial photographs, survey notes, records, reports and original maps
  4. Determine volumes of various aggregate material stockpiles utilizing GPS equipment and maintain results in specified formats
  5. Inspect final compositions to ensure completeness and accuracy
  6. Determine map content and layout, as well as production specifications such as scale, size, projection and colors and direct production to ensure that specifications as outlined in various state and local ordinances are followed
  7. Examine and analyze data from ground surveys, reports, aerial photographs and satellite images to prepare site maps, aerial-photograph mosaics and related charts
  8. Select aerial photographic and remote sensing techniques and plotting equipment needed to meet required standards of accuracy
  9. Build and update digital databases
  10. Determine scales, line sizes and colors to be used for hard copies of computerized maps, using plotters
  11. Monitor mapping work and the updating of maps in order to ensure accuracy, the inclusion of new and/or changed information and compliance with rules and regulations
  12. Identify and compile database information in order to create maps in response to requests
  13. Produce and update overlay maps in order to show information boundaries, water locations and topographic features on various base maps and at different scales
  14. Research resources such as survey maps and legal descriptions in order to verify property lines and to obtain information needed for mapping
  15. Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
  16. Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)



  1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  2. Strong organizational skills.
  3. Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  4. Able to work independently and under time constraints.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)



  1. Requires knowledge of geographic information systems and concepts at a level normally acquired through the completion of a four-year degree in GIS, Geography or similar. Applicants with applicable vocational/technical education meeting requirements will be considered.
  2. Knowledge of geographic information systems (ESRI ArcGIS applications). Knowledge of web-based GIS map server systems. Familiarity with computer aided design software (Autodesk AutoCAD). Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite Applications.
  3. Ability to become licensed to utilize Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS)/drones for GPS surveying, mapping, etc.
  4. Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.
  5. Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturdays.
