Intern - Forestry (Engineering & Public Works) summer



Are you passionate about nature and interested in making a difference in your community? The Village of Schaumburg is seeking a Forestry Intern to help maintain the health and beauty of our urban forest.


JOB SUMMARY:

This position reports to the Divison Supervisor and conducts field inspections to determine if diseases, insects, or other natural or unnatural occurrences have affected trees in the village's urban forest. This position answers requests from residents about tree health and care and prepares written and verbal reports based on inspection data. We're looking for individuals who are highly detail-oriented, self-driven, and excel in organization and written communication. The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative, work well independently, and bring a strong sense of responsibility to supporting the village's urban forestry efforts. The position is for the summer months typically based on a 40-hour work week.



JOB DUTIES:

1. Conducts field inspections and documentation to determine if diseases, insects, or other natural or unnatural occurrences have affected trees in the village's urban forest. These inspections will include site meetings with property managers and owners.
2. Monitors contractors performing tree maintenance activities in the village's parkways and other properties.
3. Assists the Forester in implementing and documenting the village's EAB Management Plan.
4. Performs other duties as assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Associate's degree or equivalency of college hours in the process of obtaining a bachelor's or master's degree in forestry or a related field. Prerequisite educational coursework includes undergraduate-level forestry, horticulture, or a related field.
2. Demonstrate a working knowledge of trees and insects and diseases that affect tree health and care. Extensive knowledge of tree identification, diseases, insects, and maintenance techniques used in managing an urban forest.
3. Possession of a valid driver's license.
4. Proficiency with current computer technology, job-specific software, and customer service systems.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Regular exposure to inclement weather conditions, standing water, mud, and temperature extremes for prolonged periods.
2. Necessity to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
3. Regular requirement for site visits to developed properties.



STARTING PAY RATE: $30.86 per hour.
