ATI is seeking to hire a R&D Engineer Intern for our Summer 2026 Internship Program. This position will be based in Millersburg, OR and will run from June to August 2026. Relocation and housing assistance is available for the summer.

As an intern at ATI, you'll gain hands-on experience, learn from experts, and collaborate with teams that do truly exceptional things. The projects and skills outlined below will be guided and directed by an established ATI-Professional in your field of interest.

What You'll Do

The R&D Engineer Intern, with the help of the R&D group, will work on development projects from start to closure including: 1) problem definition, 2) data collection and analysis, 3) formal report writing, 4) presentations to broad audiences, and 5) recommendations for future work/improvements.

Typical projects include experimental and simulation-based approaches to process improvement, product development, and general investigation of relevant scientific questions. The ideal intern will have an eye for detail and data, excellent interpersonal skills and a drive to learn about industrial scale metallurgy of Ti, Zr, Hf, and Nb-based alloys.

Basic Qualifications



  • Must be currently enrolled and pursuing a degree in materials or related science or engineering degree.
  • Materials Engineering background, lab experience working with metals, powders, refractories.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with CAD (Solidworks), FEA (Abaqus), or materials/physics modeling (COMSOL).
  • Programming for data analysis and mathematical modeling (MatLab, Python, etc.).
  • Knowledge of materials characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, mechanical testing, etc).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory/industrial safety practices, e.g. In-person university lab courses or previous industrial work experience.
  • Ability to analyze and clearly present complex data using software (Excel, Python, R, JMP, etc.).
  • Capable of writing clear, concise formal reports using word processing software (MS Word, LaTex, etc.).
  • Enjoy working safely alone with limited direct input from others, while also capable of working in a group setting at times.
  • Aptitude for managing time effectively and prioritizing between multiple tasks during project lulls.
  • Interest in fundamental metallurgy of Ti, Zr, Hf, and Nb-based alloys and their applications.
