Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Comparative Medicine provides housing and care for vertebrate animals used in research and teaching at the Brody School of Medicine and ECU. This includes provision of appropriate housing, husbandry, and behavioral management, preventive medicine and clinical care, technical and surgical research support, and ensuring compliance with multiple federal regulators and accreditation bodies. Facilities encompass over 70,000 square feet, and species include fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
Job Duties
This position is responsible for cage cleaning and sanitation, animal care, animal observation, handling and restraint, treatment, animal breeding, investigator support, and facility maintenance.

Caring for several different species, this position is responsible for feeding, watering, cleaning, handling, and administering routine medications (vaccines, topical ointments) according to established protocols and instructions. Husbandry duties involve specific pathogen-free/biohazardous areas carrying infectious agents transmissible to humans or which have been experimentally exposed to radiologic, biologic, or chemical hazardous materials. Maintain records on animal activities such as food/water consumed, vaccines/medications received, and environmental conditions such as room temperature and lighting cycles. Position observes and records animal behaviors and health conditions as directed by protocol and instruction for review by supervisor, research technician, primary investigator, or veterinarian. Performs husbandry duties, specialized care, and knowledge of a unique species or breed of animal.

Record Keeping (5%):
Maintain cage card records with meticulous attention to detail of animal experimental treatment group, and cage/animal identification.

  • Maintaining a running inventory of all animals under his/her care.
  • Prepare inventory sheets for monthly billing.
  • Record high and low temperatures daily.
  • Maintain records of dog and monkey enrichment for USDA compliance.


Animal Care and Sanitation for Conventionally Housed Animals (95%):
Feed, water, change caging, accurate animal identification, and placement for a wide variety of animal species.

  • Prepare and feed special diets as directed.
  • Weigh feed before and after a specified period of time to determine the quantity eaten. Perform daily health checks on all animals under his/her care. Report signs of health problems to the supervisor and/or veterinarian.
  • Receive, inspect, prepare identification, and prepare caging for conventionally housed animals. Participate with other animal technicians in cage and rack washing in the cage wash area. Also, sanitize watering devices and clean and disinfect animal rooms.
  • Prepare acid water or medicated as directed, carefully measuring the quantity of material to be added. Evaluate ventilation, room temperature, plumbing, and lighting time systems for proper operation-report problems to the supervisor. Evaluate the condition of caging, automatic watering devices, and other equipment. Make minor repairs and report other deficiencies to the supervisor.
  • Assist higher-level animal technicians, investigators, and veterinarians with handling, restraint, and treatments, including injections and sample collection. Carry out treatments as directed by the veterinarian to include primary observation and care if there is a health problem.
  • Weekend observation and care of micro-isolator-housed rodents using exacting modified sterile procedures for changing cages and treating animals if required.
  • Other duties include driving a state van.
  • Will lift 50 pounds occasionally.

Minimum Education/Experience
High school and one year of directly related experience required to perform the assigned duties or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
