Job Title: Clinical Pharmacy Manager - Emergency Medicine

Department: Pharmacy Services

Position Summary:

The ED Clinical Pharmacy Manager provides leadership and oversight for clinical pharmacy services in the Emergency Department. This role ensures safe, effective, and evidence-based medication therapy, leads a team of clinical pharmacists, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient care. The manager also oversees operational functions, education initiatives, regulatory compliance, and performance improvement efforts within the ED.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Leadership

  • Provide expert clinical support for medication management in emergency medicine.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain evidence-based protocols, guidelines, and order sets for emergency medicine.
  • Review complex medication regimens and provide consultative recommendations to the ED team.
  • Participate in daily rounds with ED teams to optimize pharmacologic therapy and ensure safe patient care.

Clinical and Operational Oversight

  • Provide direct clinical support for complex medication management in ED patients.
  • Participate in daily ED rounds to optimize pharmacotherapy decisions.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor evidence-based protocols, order sets, and guidelines.
  • Oversee operational pharmacy functions, including medication utilization, cost management, and workflow optimization in ED.

Education & Collaboration

  • Educate healthcare providers, pharmacists, and trainees on ED best practices.
  • Participate in ED rounds, ED quality improvement committee meetings, health system critical care council.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for pharmacy staff, residents, and students.
  • Develop and deliver educational materials and in-services on pharmacotherapy and disease management.
  • Serve as a preceptor for PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residents and APPE (Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience) students, providing clinical instruction, mentorship, and evaluation during ED rotations.

Regulatory Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with state and federal pharmacy regulations and institutional policies.
  • Maintain adherence to accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission, ASHP).
  • Monitor and report adverse drug events, medication errors, and other safety metrics.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory, operational, and performance reports as required.

Research & Performance Improvement

  • Lead and support research initiatives related to emergency medicine.
  • Design and conduct performance improvement projects aligned with hospital goals, regulatory requirements, and national standards.
  • Collaborate with ED physicians on protocol development, retrospective reviews, and prospective studies.
  • Support pharmacy residents, students, and fellows in research projects, publications, and presentations related to emergency medicine.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging literature, guidelines, and best practices to inform program development and evidence-based interventions.

Eligibility Requirements:

Education & Licensure

  • Doctor of Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Valid NYS Pharmacy License and Registration.
  • Completion of PGY2 Residency in Emergency Medicine highly preferred.
  • Board certification in Emergency Medicine or Critical Care (e.g., BCEMP, BCCCP) preferred.

Experience

  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience in academic or teaching hospitals is desirable.
  • Experience in research/performance improvement is desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, and teaching skills.
  • Strong commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.
