Seagate Recording Head Operations is searching for an outstanding Wafer Sustaining Engineer to work at the Bloomington, MN facility on D Shift (Friday - Sunday and every other Thursday from 4:00 pm to 4:00 am). These hours are subject to change with or without notice at the sole discretion of Seagate.



We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our organization, a leading point group for process engineering in the Wafer Thin Film Head Manufacturing industry.

As a Wafer Sustaining Engineer, you will play a crucial role in optimizing and maintaining the manufacturing processes for R&D Engineering and Process Engineering. This position offers a dynamic work environment with opportunities for career growth and innovation at Seagate. In this entry level position, you will have a terrific opportunity to train in and gain exposure to all engineering disciplines, as well as Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science. As part of this position, you will be able to develop skills in Photolithography, Vacuum Processing, Plating Processing, Metrology (Measurement Systems), Yield/Quality Engineering, and Equipment Engineering. You will continually enhance your problem solving and data analysis skills as you work to resolve daily product and factory issues.

About you:

As you continue to develop your skills, there will be opportunities to work on projects with Senior Engineers around your long-term career interests. You will continually enhance and advance skills in the areas of problem solving, knowledge management, data analytics, team management, automation, and efficiency to resolve product and factory issues both short and long term. In the first 6 months, you will spend a significant portion of your time training with Process Engineers and Technicians as well as training on JMP, MS Teams, MS SharePoint, Process Tool Operation, and Wafer Build. With the rapid pace of our technology development, you will rarely face the same problem twice!



The Wafer Sustaining Engineer will:




  • Perform daily troubleshooting and evaluation of suspect wafers and processes.
  • Work with process technicians, engineers, maintenance, and operations employees to resolve factory and product issues; often requires spending time in a Class 100 cleanroom.
  • Ensure proper passdown and process documentation is made and report to management the status of key factory issues including problems and potential problems.
  • Conduct SPC monitoring of tools, investigate scrap root causes, and address factory inhibitors.
  • Provide technician, trainer and operator training for the manufacturing team.
  • Review tool qualifications with equipment engineering.
  • Leverage Microsoft Teams Channels for

    • Frontline Communication with Operations, Facilities, Engineering, and Equipment Management
    • Knowledge Capture
    • Executive Communication
    • Passdown Communication


  • Improve Factory Documentation that includes control management and event management
  • Drive Best In-Class Frontline Communication and Documentation with MS Teams and MS SharePoint
  • Leverage Data Analytics

    • Dashboard Deployment
    • JMP, Excel, and Power BI


  • Drive Workflow Automation and Engineering Efficiency
  • Assist Research & Development teams with the advancement of technology.
  • Initiate and coordinate projects to improve manufacturing and wafer build efficiency.
  • Work with state of the art nanofabrication equipment.
  • Work with state of the art measurement instrumentation.
  • Develop specialization aligned with career interests
  • Take on significant engineering responsibility
  • Work on cutting edge technology
  • Work on projects aligned with their expertise
  • Work closely with colleagues, including engineers, technicians, and production teams, to achieve production targets and resolve technical issues.
  • Stay updated with the latest manufacturing technologies
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement quality control procedures that meet industry standards and customer requirements.
  • Continuously analyze and improve manufacturing processes to enhance efficiency, yield, and quality.
  • Show interest developing skills in Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Data Science


  • Support and Develop Automation with Training using Microsoft Power Automate, Python, and OCAPs.

Requirements:




  • BS degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering with 0-2 years of experience. (candidates with degrees above the Bachelor's level will not be considered)
  • Excellent Communication and Teamwork abilities.
  • Position may require limited/occasional travel.
  • Sound decision making and problems solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills and presentation skills.

100% on site at Normandale campus

The estimated base wage range for this position is $ 30.69/hr- $ 43.89 /hr. The individual base wage is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.



D Shift (Friday - Sunday and every other Thursday from 4:00 pm to 4:00 am)
