Definition

Under direct supervision, may assist in the activities of one of the Engineering Divisions including aspects of land development, capital projects, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and related civil engineering activities.
Work schedule will NOT exceed 20 hours per week.
Transcripts/proof of enrollment must be submitted with the employment application.

The Engineering Intern I/II/III position will be within the Land Development, Capital Improvement, and/or storm water/water quality divisions of the Engineering Department related to the design, construction and entitlement/development process as new development projects are received for review and approval or as Capital Improvement Program projects are assigned. Under the general supervision of the Senior Engineer or Senior Civil Engineer, the Engineering Intern I/II/III will work closely with project engineer/manager, and inspectors to assist in processing entitlement applications, capital improvement projects, water efficient landscape plans, water quality management plans, transportation plans, and other development related civil engineering duties as they are submitted to the Development Services Organization from the project inception to project construction completion. The Engineering Intern I/II/III shall be responsible for aiding project engineers/managers, inspectors, and supervisors with processing infrastructure improvements for utility relocations/undergrounding, ultimate right of way dedications, project circulation, storm water/water quality management, water efficient landscaping, and other special project requirements. Duties may include reviewing and processing maps, improvement plans, landscape plans, specifications, engineering reports, agreements, easement right of way documents, processing permits and conducting research. The Engineering Intern I/II/III will be required to coordinate with other department staff and outside agencies to obtain and share information to provide the most accurate and up to date information to project engineer, applicant, inspectors, and the public.

Essential Functions

The incumbent must have the ability to:
* Research and prepare reports; to interpret maps and plans; to perform preliminary survey work/field reviews
* Update maps; Familiar with the use of AutoCAD or similar drafting program
* Assist in performing routine field reviews and paper work related to Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and Land Development Projects that are in the construction phase
* Assist in review of street improvement, traffic signal, grading, landscape, storm drain, sewer, and other improvement plans.
* Assist with contract management of construction projects including submittal reviews, labor compliance reviews, and other reviews as deemed necessary for the completion of construction.
* Be punctual and responsible in the performance of assigned duties.
* Set up files for construction projects.
* Complete minor permit processing; Perform data entry into various tracking systems.
* Maintain and file plans and records both electronically and hard copy.
* Provide routine information to the public over the counter and via telephone.
* Demonstrate skill in using computers including office software programs.
* Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
* Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.




This position is part-time, at-will, without benefits, unless required by law.
