Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Systems Engineer plays a critical role in the development of Avanos's medical device portfolio, driving the integration of hardware, software, mechanical, and clinical requirements into safe, effective, and commercially successful products. This role is responsible for translating user needs into system-level requirements, architecting system designs, managing interfaces across disciplines, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and quality standards throughout the product lifecycle.

The ideal candidate combines strong technical acumen, systems thinking, and cross-functional collaboration skills, enabling seamless execution from concept through design transfer and sustaining engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

Systems Engineering Leadership



  • Lead system-level definition, architecture, and integration for complex medical devices which can include electromechanical and non-electromechanical systems.
  • Translate clinical and user needs into system and sub-system requirements; ensure clear traceability through design, verification, and validation.
  • Facilitate interface definition and management between hardware, software, and consumable components.
  • Conduct/support system-level risk analyses and maintain safety assurance cases.



Development Execution



  • Partner with internal design teams and external partners to deliver on milestones and risk-based development deliverables.
  • Lead design reviews and technical assessments, ensuring alignment with design inputs, regulatory requirements, and design control procedures.
  • Contribute to design verification and validation strategies, ensuring adequate system coverage and traceability to requirements.
  • Support integration testing, reliability analysis, and troubleshooting during development and verification phases.
  • Collaborate with Clinical, Quality, Regulatory, External/Internal Design Teams to ensure the design meets user, safety, and performance needs.
  • Contribute to Human Factors Engineering, usability testing, and risk-benefit evaluations.



Your qualifications

Required:




  • B.S. in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering discipline.
  • 6+ years of experience in product development within a regulated medical device or life sciences environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading system architecture, requirements definition, and integration for electromechanical or embedded software systems.
  • Strong understanding of design controls, risk management, and system verification/validation processes.
  • Excellent technical communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.



Preferred:



  • Licenses or certifications in Systems Engineering
  • Six Sigma or Agile Development Certification
  • Strong understanding of industry best practices, global medical design standards, relevant FDA guidances (e.g. ISO-13485, IEC-60601, ISO-14971, IEC-62304, IEC-60812, ISO 62366, cybersecurity, etc)
  • Experience working with requirements management tool

Salary Range:

The anticipated average base pay range for this position is $104,000 - $121,000.00. In addition, this role is eligible for an attractive incentive compensation program and benefits. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the base posted.
