Job Title: Scientist (NWS 00833)
THIS POSITION IS SHORT TERM, MAX 1000 HOURS PER CALENDAR YEAR
North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer's mission. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS.
The Physical & Life Sciences Directorate has an opening within the Physics Division in the Fusion Energy Science Program for a Scientist to assist in completing the deliverables specific under the LDRD (26-ERD-002) project. With minimal supervision, the successful candidate will conduct analysis and assist with improvements to the COGENT code. The successful candidate will have a strong background in computational plasma physics.
Essential Duties
- Provide expertise for the gyrokinetic code COGENT and assist with deliverables under the LDRD (26-ERD-002)
- Extend COGENT code algorithms to meet the deliverables of the LDRD project.
- Provide expertise in both gyrokinetic fusion simulations and numerical algorithms.
- Assist with development of implicit technologies to facilitate edge plasma transport.
- Assist with development of spatially-nonuniform velocity normalization algorithms.
- Assist with development of fluid electron models and logical sheath boundary conditions.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of journal articles.
- Assist with COGENT usability enhancements, correction of faults, and efficiency improvements.
- Assist with other activities as identified by the project principal investigator.
- Participate in project meetings and reviews.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Ph. D in Mathematics or Computer Science or other related scientific fields with a minimum of 7+ years of experience in gyrokinetic code and the LDRD project.
- Deep knowledge of the COGENT code and its numerical algorithms, attention to detail, multi-tasking
- Experience utilizing COGENT code, C++, and Fortran.
- Experience in the development of numerical algorithms and their COGENT implementation.

Anticipated Government Clearance Level: P
(position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
