JMT is seeking a Traffic Designer to join the Traffic department in the Newark, Delaware office. The Newark office is in a convenient location and easy to access from not just within Delaware but also from the neighboring states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. The Traffic Designer will be involved in projects with our Transportation Team and be a part of a fast-growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Position summary: Responsible for traffic design using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate assignments. Tasks may include performing capacity analyses and assisting with traffic engineering design including signing and pavement marking, traffic signals, and signal timings. Ensures that responsibilities are delivered and adhered to with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Essential functions and responsibilities



  • Perform traffic engineering design including signing and pavement marking, traffic signals, signal timing directive, lighting, maintenance of traffic, detours and traffic control and ITS devices
  • Perform traffic safety and traffic analysis studies based on the Highway Capacity Manual and Highway Safety Manual
  • Perform various traffic engineering studies such as determining the need for traffic signals
  • Review maps, drawings, prepare aerial mapping and other geologic data to plan projects
  • Design projects in accordance with client specifications and guidelines
  • Develop construction cost estimates
  • Assist with field work as needed, which may include using various traffic devices for data collection and reviewing traffic operations

Required Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Written and communication skills

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related coursework in Traffic or Transportation Engineering
  • EIT certificate or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire
  • 0-2+ years of related experience outside of coursework
  • Basic experience in CAD (i.e. Microstation or AutoCAD)


Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
