Overview Substations Operations is hiring General Utility Workers to support Southern Ops, Northern Ops, Electrical Construction, and Maintenance departments. Candidates must be safety-focused, adaptable, and able to work across varied environments within our service territory.
Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities
- Perform substation tasks under the direction of management or senior personnel, supporting operations, maintenance, construction, and repair of equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, and AC/DC control systems.
- Perform housekeeping duties within substation operations to maintain clean, safe, and organized work environments.
- Must demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.
- Willing to travel within the service territory as needed; will be required to use personal vehicle during working hours.
- Attend training to gain knowledge and skill in the use of hand and power tools, environmental policies and procedures.
- Apply Safe work practices.
- Perform standard operating functions and obtain certificates of fitness and licenses as required.
- This position may require the operation of a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) weighing between 10,000-26,000 pounds.
- Selected candidates must have access to a motor vehicle for travel within the service territory.
- Advance to senior title in the career path placed in.
- Selected candidates may be assigned to work in one of the following regions based on business needs: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Westchester or Manhattan.
- Must be available to work regular or rotating shiftsincluding nights, weekends, holidays, and midnightswith schedules subject to change based on departmental needs.
- If extended a conditional job offer candidate will need to pass a DOT physical exam, and upon passing exam will obtain Department of Transportation medical examiners certificate and is prohibited from using marijuana.

- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
- Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
- Unload materials from delivery vehicles and deliver equipment and materials to various operating facilities
- Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
- Acknowledge that if selected, must pass a Physical Abilites Test (PAT)
- Use hand-eye coordination to adjust controls on equipment
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays
- Use personal vehicle(s), and be able to transport, store, and secure company laptops and other job-related equipment in vehicle. Acknowledge that reimbursement for use of personal vehicle is available through the company mileage procedure
Additional Physical Demands
- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 350lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
