This role is open to December 2025, Spring 2026 and Summer 2026 graduates.

Position Summary

The Grid Planning Studies team focuses on transmission-level analysis of generator additions and modifications. These generation resources include but are not limited to solar, battery, and natural gas sites that may range from several hundred kW to more than 1 GW. The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Responsibilities

* Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
* Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
* Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
* Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
* Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
* Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
* Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Required/Basic Qualifications

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program no later than Summer 2026.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

  • Previous Duke Energy internship/co-op experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Electrical Engineering

  • Professional Engineer

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills. This position will require documentation of generator interconnection studies and communication of results to interconnection customers.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Prior experience performing transmission analysis with PSSE and/or TARA

  • Experience with PSCAD

  • Prior experience preforming transmission related generator interconnection studies

  • Familiarity with FERC and state (FL) generator interconnection procedures.

  • Programming experience with Python.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the Northpoint Office Building in Lake Mary, FL or the Energy Control Center in St. Petersburg, FL.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
