UCI MIND is an Organized Research Unit focusing on basic and clinical research in the fields of brain aging and cognitive disorders. Our mission is to discover means to improve the lives of people with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. UCI MIND is committed to community education by providing insights to help community members lower their risk of developing dementia.

The UC Irvine Transgenic Mouse Facility (TMF) is a core facility that provides services on a recharge basis for making, breeding, genotyping, importing, and preserving genetically-modified mice and embryonic stem cells. In addition to academic clients at UCI, we also service academic investigators at several other sister UC-campuses and numerous other universities throughout the USA as well as providing these services to commercial clients.

Your Role on the Team

Under the general supervision of the UC Irvine Transgenic Mouse Facility (TMF) Managing Director, the successful applicant will participate in the generation of genetically modified, using CRISPR genome editing technology within the TMF. This position is suited to an individual with a professional approach to laboratory animal care and a strong interest in advancing genetic research.

The successful candidate will be responsible for comprehensive mouse husbandry, conducting genetic crosses, tissue biopsy collection, and meticulous data recording to deploy newly developed genetically modified mouse lines to the research community, including late-onset Alzheimer's disease models. The role requires someone who demonstrates professionalism and attention to detail in animal care.

Additional laboratory responsibilities include performing molecular biology procedures and analysis, such as DNA extraction from mouse tissue biopsies, participating in molecular characterization of genetic modifications using Sanger and Next-Gen sequencing technologies, and assisting in the development and optimization of genotyping assays using PCR and qPCR methodologies. The successful candidate will start to follow established protocols and procedures while contributing to the advancement of cutting-edge genetic modification technologies.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $26.41- $28.13 (Hourly).

Special Conditions:

  • Early morning shift required: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. May be required to work on weekends as needed. Must wear protective clothing (PPE) provided. Constant exposure to possible allergens in the animal rooms, including (but not limited to) animal waste from dirty cages, dirty bedding, animal hair and dander and dust.The work area is enclosed with no direct access to open air.
