Clinical Tracks:

  • The King of Prussia (KOP) campus offers a close-knit, community hospital environment backed by the extensive resources of CHOP. Nurse Externs have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience across a variety of clinical areas, which may include the Emergency Department, PICU/Oncology, Peri-Operative Services, General Pediatrics, Surgical, N/IICU, and Adolescent care. During the program, externs can expect to rotate through 2-3 specialty areas to broaden their clinical exposure and skillset.
  • The Ambulatory Track offers Nurse Externs an opportunity to work alongside nurses in both Primary Care and Specialty/Subspecialty Care Clinics at CHOP. Ambulatory externs participate in direct patient care, including patient/family education, health promotion, and disease treatment. The Ambulatory Track provides externs a wonderful opportunity to learn the role of the ambulatory nurse and strengthen critical thinking and clinical skills.
  • The Perioperative Nurse Extern experience is an immersion into the various procedural spaces within CHOP. Externs rotate through the Main Operating Room (OR), Cardiothoracic OR, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Perianesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Cardiac Prep and Recovery Unit (CPRU), Gastrointestinal (GI) Suite, and Sedation. For those interested in the operative space, this is a great opportunity to get a glimpse into that career path.
  • The Behavioral Health (BH) Nurse Extern Track at CHOP offers hands-on experience caring for children and adolescents with emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Through rotations on the Philadelphia Adolescent Unit and Medical Behavioral Unit, externs will care for patients with conditions such as suicidal ideation, mood disorders, eating disorders, ingestions, and co-occurring medical and behavioral concerns. BH Nurse Externs also have the opportunity to shadow roles such as the Behavioral Health Resource Nurse, the Behavioral Health Clinician Charge, and within the Behavioral Health & Crisis Center (BHCC). The program builds foundational skills in trauma-informed care, focusing on communication, empathy, teamwork, and the use of safety and de-escalation techniques through interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • The Medical Surgical & Critical Care Nurse Extern Track at CHOP offers future nurses an opportunity to experience nursing across a continuum of care. Nurse Externs in this track will spend time seeing the specialized care that CHOP delivers across it's medical-surgical units as well as intensive care areas. Nurse Externs will rotate between one (1) medical-surgical area and one (1) intensive care area. Medical-surgical units may include the Emergency Department, Oncology, General Pediatrics & Complex Care Units, Pulmonary Unit, Gastrointestinal & Endocrine Unit, Neurology Unit, Hematology & Nephrology Unit, Cardiac Stepdown Unit, Surgical/Trauma Unit, Infant Transitional Care Unit, and Inpatient Rehabilitation. Intensive care areas may include Cardiac, Neonatal, or Pediatric Intensive Care units. This is a great opportunity for future nurses interested in pursuing pediatric nursing and are looking to explore different care areas within that realm.
