Job Summary
TheMaterials Manager develops and leads all materials planning and inventory management strategies with a focus on operational excellence and business growth in an inventory-optimized environment. This role drives decision-making across SIOP (Sales, Inventory & Operations Planning), MRP (Material Requirements Planning), Kanban, and Just-in-Time (JIT) processes while ensuring accurate forecasting, right-sized inventory, and on-time material delivery to production and distribution.
The goal is to maintain an optimal balance between product availability and efficient material investment-supporting internal teams that depend on timely, accurate, and data-driven material flow.
Primary Duties
- Lead the Materials Planning and Inventory Management team to improve fill rates, optimize inventory turns, and drive supply chain performance.
- Utilize historical data, forecasting models, seasonality trends, and sales projections to determine material requirements and replenishment timing.
- Develop and execute SIOP and MRP strategies that align production, planning, and inventory with company goals.
- Implement and manage Kanban and JIT processes to improve flow, reduce waste, and increase on-time availability.
- Drive inventory right-sizing by balancing demand signals with production and material planning to minimize excess and obsolete inventory.
- Monitor and report on-time material delivery metrics, collaborating across operations, warehouse, and logistics to ensure alignment.
- Partner with Operations and Production Planning to manage capacity, material flow, and scheduling constraints.
- Manage, develop, and train a team of Material Planners focused on forecasting accuracy, system utilization, and data integrity.
- Establish and track KPIs including forecast accuracy, inventory turns, on-time delivery, and plan adherence.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives across planning, forecasting, and materials flow to enhance operational efficiency.
- Oversee all inventory management systems and processes, ensuring accuracy, accountability, and alignment with growth objectives.
- Collaborate cross-functionally on new product launches, capacity expansions, and demand-driven process improvements.
Qualifications
- ERP & MRP Systems Expertise: Proven experience utilizing ERP/MRP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) to manage materials planning, forecasting, and inventory optimization.
- SIOP, MRP & Kanban Implementation: Demonstrated success in deploying or improving SIOP, MRP, Kanban, and JIT processes to align demand and supply.
- Forecasting & Analysis: Strong analytical skills with experience in demand forecasting, trend analysis, and quantitative decision-making.
- Inventory Optimization: Deep understanding of right-sizing inventory, managing turns, and ensuring availability for production and fulfillment.
- Leadership & Team Development: Proven ability to coach, develop, and lead a high-performing planning team.
- Operational & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Skilled in aligning operations, production, and logistics to achieve end-to-end supply chain goals.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and data-driven material planning tools.
- Continuous Improvement Mindset: Focused on process standardization, system utilization, and KPI-based performance.
Education / Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Business, or related field.
- 5-7 years of advanced materials planning, inventory management, and ERP experience, or 10+ years of progressive experience in materials and operations management.
- Minimum of 5 years leading a materials or planning team, including experience developing process improvements and team performance metrics.
- Experience in consumer goods, electronics, or aftermarket manufacturing preferred.
