Job Summary


The Department of Medicine (DOM) Central Administration provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to the department's divisions across UCSF Health hospitals, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, and the San Francisco VA Medical Center.

Reporting to the Associate Chair for Administration, the Project Manager leads a broad portfolio of high-level administrative functions, including event planning, budgeting, human resources, communications, and operational governance. The role ensures consistency, efficiency, and alignment of processes and standards across the department, supporting the largest department in the School of Medicine.

The Project Manager advises and guides administrative and professional staff across core and auxiliary functions, fostering collaboration, and operational excellence. The incumbent manages high-impact initiatives that advance departmental and institutional priorities, as well as critical communications among the Chair's Office, Dean's Office, division leadership, and UCSF Health executives, ensuring coordinated decision-making and smooth information flow. The position also provides continuity during staff transitions in the Chair's Office.

The Project Manager is expected to operate independently, demonstrating sound judgment, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to navigate ambiguity while delivering consistent, high-quality results in a fast-paced academic medical environment. Success in this role requires exceptional organizational and communication skills, a proven ability to manage competing priorities, and a strong orientation toward collaboration, innovation, and service. The Project Manager is a visible leader within the department, embodying UCSF's PRIDE Values (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence) in every aspect of their work and engagement.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $87,900 - $187,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care, and public service. The DOM has an annual budget of ~$892M across three sites with ~3,000 employees. The DOM comprises 27% of all UCSF faculty, 29% of the SOM's faculty, and 20% of the SOM budget. For the past 30 years, the DOM has consistently ranked among the top four departments of medicine in the country, and in the last several years, the department has been the number one recipient of NIH research dollars. The DOM has 20 ACGME and 24 non-ACGME fellowship programs, and its internal medicine residency has consistently been ranked as one of the top programs in the country.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 5+ years of directly relevant work experience
  • Advanced interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills
  • Advanced knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as event planning, basic fundraising processes, risk management planning, website design, accounting and payroll, and contracts and grants regulations and guidelines
  • Advanced knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Advanced skills in short- and long-term strategic planning, analysis, problem-solving and customer service

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees
  • Advanced knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management
