Position Overview:

The Grid Engineering Applications Manager is responsible for leading a team that develops, implements and manages applications and systems used for grid engineering and other ancillary applications in collaboration with the Operations organization. Through partnership with the business, this role ensures reliable and efficient operation of the power grid, as well as optimizes performance and supports strategic objectives of the Operations organization. Responsibilities include, but are not exclusive to critical applications such as ESRI (GIS), CYME, ArcFM, etc.



Location: Hybrid, downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.



Job Responsibilities:

The Manager, Grid Engineering Applications responsibilities will include:



Leadership and Management:



  • Lead, mentor and develop a team of leadership, engineers, and technical professionals.
  • Foster collaboration and an innovative work environment.
  • Assist Senior Manager with departmental budgets, resources and project timelines.
  • Set performance goals and conduct regular touch bases and performance evaluations with direct reports.



Application Management:



  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of applications/technology utilized by the operations department in conjunction with the Operations Technology team. .
  • Ensure the reliability, stability and efficiency of the critical applications.
  • Develop strategies for grid modernization and resilience.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate renewable energy sources and advanced grid technologies.
  • Participate in research and make recommendations on software products and services in support of procurement and development efforts in collaboration with business units.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
  • Ensure that any new software integration into company systems meets functional requirements, system compliance, interface specifications and architectural standards.



Operational Management:



  • Manage and provide direction for the application development team in support of business operations, development practices, etc.
  • Identify and resolve program errors.
  • Provide technical leadership to project managers and programmers working on development project teams including development and accountability for appropriate KPI's and standards.
  • Design, develop, and install software and upgrades to systems.
  • Liaise with product teams, cloud and infrastructure teams to assist with quality assurance, program logic, and data processing.
  • Cultivate, disseminate, and enforce functional policies, procedures, and quality assurance best practices.
  • Where necessary, prepare, establish, and monitor budgets.



Stakeholder Engagement:



  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory partners and customers as appropriate.
  • Communicate technical information and project updates to IT Leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Represent the organization at industry conferences, workshops and meetings.



Formal Education & Certification:



  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Computer Science or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.



Knowledge & Experience:



  • At least 7+ years of experience in technology, utility applications, asset management, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of power grid operations, infrastructure and technologies preferred, including GIS applications and prior modeling experience.
  • Proficiency in application development and management, including software lifecycle management and project management.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Scope:

Primary focus is on day-to-day management of operational execution also develops and exercises business plans, policies, and procedures. Contributes to proactive planning exercises of management team as requested. Trains and develops staff. Plans the workflow. Looks for areas of process improvement and directs available resources to accomplish this. Leads changes and implementations for direct team as pushed down through the organization.



Decision Impact:

Resolves problems of great complexity. Improves existing processes & systems using conceptualizing, reasoning, & interpretation skills. Solutions require through understanding of business strategies and issues. Defines broad based solutions that would require consideration of wider implications on organization results & resources.



Hybrid Work:

Position follows our hybrid work model, with a minimum of two days working in the office and the remaining days working remotely. Reporting location and frequency may be subject to change based on job role and department needs.



Storm Roles:

All Non-Union Employees will serve in storm roles as appropriate to their role and skillset. Please be sure to discuss storm roles with the hiring manager for this position, as duties can vary across the Company. Examples of storm roles could include but aren't limited to duties such as: working with operations for service center support or with the communications, customer service or government affairs teams to respond to public and customer requests for information, etc.



Data Governance:

Utilize data to make business decisions as appropriate for the position, support data stewardship activities and partner with IT on underlying data needs.
