About the Opportunity
The In-Court Litigation Counsel will
be part of the team of attorneys employed in the Office of Legal Affairs at the
UNC System Office and will be responsible for providing legal advice and
representation to the University relating to all aspects of litigation in
federal, state, and administrative courts. Case assignments could arise from
any of the seventeen constituent institutions of the UNC System, or the System
Office itself, including affiliates. This position could require near daily
appearance in court and discovery matters on behalf of the University. In many
instances, this attorney could be designated "first chair" in
multiple matters at one time. Practicing attorneys with the requisite
experience seeking more frequent court appearances and case topic diversity to
foster litigation career development are encouraged to apply.

This attorney will collaborate with other attorneys at the UNC System
Office, within the general counsel's offices at the UNC System universities,
the North Carolina Department of Justice, and private counsel on litigation
involving the University. The position will be part of the Office of Legal
Affairs for the UNC System Office and will serve under the supervision and
direction of the General Counsel. The Office of Legal Affairs strives to

judgment, unimpeachable ethics and a fair helping of perspective and humor.

This position will be funded using a shared services agreement.

This position is an onsite work arrangement and will work five days per week at the Dillon building in downtown Raleigh's Warehouse District. UNC System employees are generally required to reside in North Carolina within a 2-hour commuting distance of their assigned duty station, although residence in Wake County is strongly preferred for this position.

About the UNC System Office

The UNC System Office includes the offices of the President and other senior administrators of the multi-campus University of North Carolina System. System Office staff is responsible for executing the policies of the UNC Board of Governors and providing University-wide leadership in the areas of academic affairs, business and financial management, long-range planning, student affairs, research, legal affairs, and government relations. The UNC System Office also has administrative oversight of a number of University affiliates, including PBS North Carolina, the North Carolina Arboretum, the NC State Education Assistance Authority, and University of North Carolina Press.

About the Team
The Legal Affairs division provides advice and counsel to the Board of Governors, the President, and members of the senior staff with regard to all legal and policy issues affecting the University including litigation, employment and personnel, research, intellectual property, real property and construction, governance and parliamentary procedure, privacy and public information, ethics and conflicts of interest, risk management, fiscal accountability, student and academic affairs, and constitutional issues affecting higher education. The division serves as the University's primary liaison to the North Carolina Department of Justice for purposes of ensuring appropriate management of the University's litigation matters and is responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures to promote awareness and compliance University system-wide with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and administrative requirements.

Minimum Education, Experience, and Skills
Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school, admission to the North Carolina bar, and five years of legal experience, including substantial trial and/or appellate litigation experience in state and federal proceedings.
