POSITION OVERVIEW & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Energy Modeling Engineer I plays a key role in the successful execution of projects. This individual will provide technical and engineering excellence, as well as successful delivery of work to our customers. The Engineer is responsible for a high level of customer satisfaction by ensuring expectations are clearly communicated and managed - both externally and internally. The successful candidate will also contribute to a dynamic team environment by being proactive, communicating clearly and frequently, and modeling a highly collaborative working environment.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Prepares engineering documents and equipment specifications to meet contracted scope of work and to ensure application of Thermodynamic Principles (e.g., HVAC Engineering and Design, load/energy modeling calculations, etc.). More specifically:
    • Develops building load models.
    • Develops design assistance energy models.
    • Complete ComCheck or other code compliance documentation
    • Performs engineering calculations in support of project designs (ie. ventilation calculations)
    • Completes sustainability standard compliance documentation (i.e. B3, LEED, or other standards)
    • Supports continuing development of calculation and modeling tools as required or requested.
  • Supports all KFI operating groups with energy calculations.
  • Basic understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Civil and Structural Engineering construction practices.
  • Develop estimates for assigned scope of work and is accountable for ensuring we stay within scope.
  • Support the business development process through input to proposals, meeting and presenting to prospective customers, etc.
  • Review of drawing submittals.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to other departments/disciplines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Commissioning Duties to include:

  • Assist with functional testing of HVAC and lighting control systems for commissioning projects. Perform test & balance (TAB) measurements and processes in new construction applications.
  • Support Project Managers with technical write-ups of these activities/reports.
  • Complete tasks within the budgets provided by Project Managers. Assist with the development of system checklists and functional performance test scripts.
  • Perform simple Cx/RCx measurements and test scripts independently
  • May review and comment on equipment submittals for commissioned systems.
  • Assist with RCx energy analysis and/or ECM calculations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 0 - 4 years of mechanical engineering experience.
  • Basic understanding of Architectural, Electrical, Civil and Structural Engineering construction practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to enable effective interaction with Designers, Engineers, and Project Managers
  • Ability to assimilate a range of ideas, programs, or alternatives into a set of recommendations.
  • Self-directed and thrives in an environment where consultation leads to superior outcomes.
  • Adaptable and agile, responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • Ability to establish rapport and credibility with customers and other stakeholders.
  • Proficient in use of MS Office (Word, Outlook, Excel).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective meeting management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of computer technology and specific areas of application .
  • Travel: May include up to 25% domestic travel

Preferred

  • Successful completion of Mechanical Engineering internship(s) or co-op(s) or related industry experience.
  • Willingness to work toward EIT (Engineering in Training) certification and subsequent Professional Engineering Certification (PE).
  • Knowledge in both Revit and/or AutoCAD.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or willingness to pursue this designation is highly preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Some work locations will feature the tough terrain typical of construction sites or require lifting or moving field testing equipment.

Salary Range: $70,000 - $87,000 annually. The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual qualifications, experience, work location, and education. This position is eligible for an annual bonus.
