Summary

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for overseeing and managing the safety and security operations for a campus or other unit within the health system. The role provides strategic leadership and accountability for the assigned area of responsibility that ensures the protection of patients, staff, visitors, and hospital property. This includes all budgetary, personnel, training, resource allocation, and operational activities for the assigned area. The director works closely with law enforcement, fire, and other emergency responders to address and mitigate potential risks. They lead a team of public safety personnel, coordinate training programs, conduct safety audits, and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, legal requirements and DNV accreditation standards. Additionally, the director serves in an on-call status, is a member of the health systems Incident Management Team (IMT) and is subject to assignment at any campus or unit within the health system.

Requirements

Education: 2 years of formal education or training beyond high school, or Associates Degree required. Fields of study: Criminal Justice, Public Safety, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, Emergency Management, or a related field. Bachelor's Degree preferred. Law Enforcement Supervisory experience over four years; Staff NCO (E-6 and above) military experience over four years; or four years security management experience with rank of sergeant or above may be substituted for associates degree.

Experience: 3 or more years leadership experience in healthcare public safety or security or law enforcement required. Familiarity with healthcare-specific regulations, such as OSHA standards, DNV accreditation standards, and HIPAA compliance preferred.

Certification: State issued armed security officer certification or completion of a law enforcement training academy preferred. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals preferred. ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP) preferred. Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) preferred.

License: Valid State of Florida driver's license with good driving record required within 30 days of employment. State of Florida Security Class "D" and Class G license required within first 90 days of employment.
