SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The primary purpose of the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Supervisor is to lead the EHS function at a pharmaceutical tableting facility. Proper execution of this role will help ensure the site is a safe workplace and that it performs in a manner that meets or exceeds the company EHS strategy and expectations. The EHS Supervisor will also champion and collaborate on projects that support the goals and objectives of the site or the Company.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for all EHS programs that must be in place to achieve compliance with federal, state, and local, EHS regulations. Manages all contact with the related and appropriate agencies.
  • Develop and implement compliance programs for Air, Wastewater and Stormwater permits as well as hazardous waste management.
  • Perform the regulatory required environmental analytical testing, recordkeeping and reporting and function as the final EHS reviewer to ensure the highest quality of the work.
  • Develop and maintain the required employee Industrial Hygiene and Medical monitoring programs.
  • Identify, communicate, and mitigate site EHS risks by implementing workplace hazard assessment and solution programs.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the site EHS Management System with the appropriate EHS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring their alignment with Company EHS policies.
  • Develop and track to closure, preventative and corrective actions that reduce health, safety and environmental hazards or potential hazards.
  • Review proposed projects for EHS impacts and management of change requirements.
  • Evaluate new products for site operational EHS impacts and communicate EHS risk issues to new product project teams.
  • Develop and implement EHS training curricula as required by regulation, Company policy or site SOP.
  • Maintain OSHA injury and illness recordkeeping compliance and serves as the site approval for all recordkeeping decisions.
  • Manage development, implementation and performance of the assigned location(s) tactical emergency response activity including leadership champion for the program, conducting drills, recruitment of team members, training for participants and liaison with local emergency response organizations.
  • Ensure that a collaborative and technically competent system exists to specify and maintain safety equipment and PPE inventory for the location. Including appropriate performance specification of materials.
  • Ensure incident investigations are conducted by appropriate location resources for EHS incidents/Near Miss events and those investigations are of a quality that meets or exceeds the current Company policy.
  • Promote continual improvement by developing and implementing a site EHS self-audit program.
  • Lead /guide the overall operational improvement plan and the prioritization of EHS related capital improvements.
  • Collect, maintain, and facilitate the rollup of site EHS and Sustainability Performance Metrics to the Company data platform(s).
  • Perform in the capacity of individual contributor, subject matter expert and/or leadership role for corporate projects and teams as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education:

  • B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or a related technical/EHS field.

Experience:

  • 1 - 3 years of experience in a chemical, refining or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Preferred experience in the following areas: OSHA General Worker Safety, Hazardous and Nonhazardous Waste program management, Construction, Air, Wastewater, and Stormwater permits and implementation, and Community Right-to-Know program management.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable in OSHA, EPA, and local regulations.
  • Emergency Response background would be helpful.
  • Professional certifications (i.e., CIH, CSP, PE, CHMM, QEP, CET, ISA) are a plus.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma and Lean manufacturing.
  • Facilitates the implementation of change.
  • Must hold employee safety and compliance as their highest priority.
  • Ability to maintain a balance between Teamwork and Compliance with Safety issues.
  • Must be open to a changing environment and changing responsibilities.
  • Able to use analytical, conceptual, and strategic thinking as appropriate.

  • Continuous education on other plant operations (i.e., financial, GMP, DEA, Logistics, etc.)

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:

Reports to Plant Manager. Position serves as the EHS representative within the assigned site leadership team.

As a part of the extended corporate EHS team, this position may be assigned to Company EHS initiatives or teams and/or directed to assist other Mallinckrodt locations with EHS issues and projects (remote or travel to location). Occasional travel is expected for this position (estimated to be 2-4 occurrences per year).

Works with remote direct supervision at all times. Decisions are generally made without direct input from up-line or on-site management and are based upon the incumbent's experience, judgment and understanding of regulatory requirements, management systems and site objectives.

Financial responsibilities include developing and managing operating budgets as well as developing necessary capital expenditures to maintain operations of EHS and or improve the locations EHS performance.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This position works both in the Office and Plant setting, mostly indoors and only occasionally outdoors.
  • Outdoor conditions may include the temperature and weather extremes.
  • Work outside of normal business hours may be required including working early, staying after normal working hours, weekend work, or holiday work.
  • Physical demands of this job include extensive periods of walking and standing.
  • Exposure to fugitive emissions of chemicals typical for chemical operations.
  • Must be able wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as hard hats, safety glasses, safety shoes, etc., as deemed necessary.
  • Position will require travel to other internal sites and/or other companies on an infrequent and assigned basis.
