The Ground Systems Architect will be a key contributor to the development of a Government Reference Architecture (GRA) for Ground Segments, focused on promoting interoperability among future adopting platforms within the Air Force & other Joint Forces. This position requires extensive knowledge of existing and emerging Ground Segment architectures, technologies, and standards. The ideal candidate will also possess experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools, leveraging them to enhance GRA development, communication, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Government Reference Architecture (GRA) Development for Ground Segments
  • Lead the development and documentation of the Government Reference Architecture (GRA) for ground segments, ensuring alignment with Air Force strategic goals and objectives.
  • Define architectural principles, standards, and guidelines to promote interoperability, modularity, severability, and scalability across future adopting platform ground segments.
  • Analyze existing and emerging ground segment architectures, technologies, and standards to inform the GRA development process.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from various organizations (e.g., program offices, system integrators, industry partners) to gather requirements and ensure the GRA meets their needs.
  • Champion and assist with the adoption of the GRA within the Air Force and broader DoD community.
Interoperability Focus
  • Identify and address interoperability challenges among existing and future ground segments.
  • Develop solutions and recommendations to improve data exchange, communication protocols, and functional integration.
  • Evaluate the impact of new technologies and standards on ground segment interoperability.
  • Promote the use of open standards and common interfaces to facilitate interoperability.
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Integration
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principles and tools to create digital models of the GRA and its key interfaces, simulating system integration and interoperability. (e.g., Cameo Systems Modeler, Enterprise Architect, MagicDraw)
  • Develop and maintain system models to support trade studies, architectural analysis, and validation of GRA principles.
  • Translate user needs and future platform requirements into the GRA, ensuring alignment with interoperability objectives.
Documentation and Communication
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive technical documentation for the GRA, including architectural diagrams, interface specifications, and implementation guidelines.
  • Create system models and outputs that support communication with technical teams, stakeholders, and leadership regarding the GRA.
  • Present the GRA to various audiences, including program managers, system engineers, and government officials.
Risk Management and Continuous Improvement
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with the implementation and adoption of the GRA.
  • Continuously monitor the effectiveness of the GRA and adjust as needed to improve its relevance and impact.
  • Incorporate lessons learned from past and current programs to refine the GRA development process.
  • Continuously mature adoption feedback loops to harvest best of breed services and practices
Collaboration and Leadership
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including system integrators, software developers, cybersecurity professionals, and acquisition personnel.
  • Mentor junior engineers on best practices in ground systems architecture and (where applicable) MBSE methodologies related to reference architectures.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to government stakeholders, providing guidance on how the GRA can improve program outcomes and mission readiness.
Key Competencies
  • Extensive knowledge of ground systems architecture principles, technologies, and standards.
  • Deep understanding of interoperability challenges and solutions in complex systems.
  • Experience developing and documenting architectural reference models or frameworks.
  • Proficiency in MBSE tools, techniques, and modeling languages (e.g., SysML) is highly desirable.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of system development lifecycles, DoD acquisition processes, and MIL-STDs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to evaluate complex systems and optimize interoperability.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and meet strict deadlines in a classified environment.
Basic Qualifications
  • Security Clearance: Active Top Secret clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI).
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Systems, or related field. Advanced degrees are preferred, but equivalent military or professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in systems engineering, with a focus on ground systems architecture and standards.
  • Experience developing or working with architectural reference models or frameworks is highly desired.
  • Experience applying MBSE methodologies in DoD environments is preferred, especially in the context of architecture modeling.
  • Proficiency in MBSE tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler, MagicDraw, or Enterprise Architect is highly desirable.
