Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications

  • 3 or more years of experience within the Human Resources field.
  • 3 or more years of experience supervising employees.
  • 3 or more years of experience in Employee Relations, including conflict resolution and providing guidance on employee-related matters.
  • 3-5 years of experience with Position Management, including job description development, position evaluation, and organizational development planning.


Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Human Resources provides leadership and management of HR operations within the Office of Research. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Human Resources, this role is responsible for ensuring compliance with university policies, managing the increasing volume and complexity of unit-level HR transactions and initiatives, advising unit supervisors on complex HR matters, supporting the VPR office in talent acquisition and retention strategies, implementing unit-level workforce development initiatives, managing the responsiveness of the VPR office to employee relations issues, and managing initiatives that enhance organizational effectiveness. The Assistant Director serves as a unit-level subject matter expert in talent management, classification and compensation, employee relations, and faculty affairs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies


  • HR Laws & Compliance: Strong understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws (e.g., FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, Title IX), as well as University System of Georgia (USG) policies and procedures.

  • HR Functions: In-depth knowledge of core HR areas including recruitment, compensation, employee relations, performance management, benefits, training and development, and labor relations.

  • Planning & Execution: Ability to design and implement HR strategies that align with institutional goals and address long-term workforce needs.

  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with leadership, staff, faculty, and external partners. Ability to explain complex HR policies and resolve sensitive issues diplomatically.

  • Data Analysis & Decision-Making: Proficiency in using HRIS systems, analyzing HR metrics, and making data-informed decisions.

  • Conflict Resolution & Mediation: Skill in managing employee relations issues, conducting investigations, and resolving conflicts fairly and legally.

  • Project Management: Ability to lead HR initiatives, manage timelines and deliverables, and coordinate cross-functional teams.

  • Leadership: Ability to lead and motivate HR staff, promote a culture of service and continuous improvement, and represent HR at leadership meetings.

  • Judgment & Discretion: High degree of professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment when handling sensitive or high-impact personnel matters.

  • Adaptability: Ability to respond proactively to changing regulations, institutional priorities, and emerging workforce trends.

  • Collaboration: Capacity to build strong working relationships across departments, fostering a cooperative and inclusive HR service environment.

Supervision, Compliance, and Employee Relations

  • Supervise HR staff, including the full-time HR coordinator and part-time HR assistant, and delegate routine tasks.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and performance evaluations to direct reports to support professional development.
  • Manage HR transaction submissions by direct reports, and approve transactions.
  • Serve as primary contact for employee relations matters within OoR.
  • Provide coaching and counsel to unit managers on performance management, conflict resolution, and disciplinary actions.
  • Serve as a liaison to UGA's Human Resources, Equal Opportunity Office, and Office of Legal Affairs for employee relations issues.
  • Ensure direct report and unit transaction compliance with federal, state, and institutional employment laws and policies.
  • Supervise HR assistants in developing onboarding and offboarding materials.
  • Ensure timely provisioning of system access, delivery of orientations, and provide policy education.

Duties/Responsibilities
Position Management

  • Conduct and review compensation analysis for new hires, promotions, and retention offers.
  • Advise CBO on appropriate job classifications and salary structures using trend analysis, market data, internal equity considerations, and other data.
  • Utilize systems such as OneUSG Connect, UGAJobs, and Data Warehouse for analysis and reporting.
  • Provide policy guidance to CBO, unit supervisors, and employees.
  • Act as the primary Faculty Affairs Liaison, attending workshops and advising departments on faculty appointments and actions.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for all employee types, ensuring consistency, compliance, and a positive new hire experience.
  • Manage the offboarding process, including conducting exit interviews, ensure system de-provisioning, assign final payroll actions, and oversee return of university property.
  • Analyze onboarding and exit data to identify trends and recommend improvements to retention and engagement strategies to CBO.
  • Communicate with OoR employees as needed on HR policies, procedures, and other needs.
