IT Intern
American Public Education Inc.

The Information Security Intern supports initiatives to protect our systems, networks, and data from cyber threats. Interns will gain exposure to security policies, risk assessments, compliance frameworks, and tools used to detect and respond to threats. This is a part time role running approximately 3-4 hours per day from June to early August.

Responsibilities:



  • 20% Monitor security alerts and logs from various security tools (SIEM, EDR, firewalls, IDS/IPS, etc.).
  • 10% Triage and escalate potential security incidents in accordance with defined procedures.
  • 20% Assist in the analysis and investigation of security incidents.
  • 20% Document incident reports, findings, and actions taken.
  • 20% Review systems for security vulnerabilities.
  • 10% Contribute to improving security processes and runbooks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Requirements:



  • Current enrollment in a bachelor's degree or certification program in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in cybersecurity and willingness to learn.
  • Basic understanding of networking, system administration, and information security principles.
  • Familiarity with security tools such as SIEMs, antivirus, and firewalls (experience with tools like Splunk, Wireshark, or Security Onion is a plus).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Education:

Currently enrolled in Cybersecurity certificate or degree program
