Position Purpose
The Executive Director of Arts and Sciences Communications serves as a vital member of the leadership cabinet for the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. This new role is pivotal in shaping and executing a cohesive communications strategy that supports the School's identity, amplifies its impact, and aligns with Dartmouth's broader institutional mission.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, with a dotted-line relationship to the Senior Vice President for Communications, the Executive Director ensures alignment between School-level communications and institutional strategies. This position leads the Arts and Sciences Communications team and partners closely with departmental and divisional leaders to elevate the School's visibility, support strategic priorities, and foster engagement among both internal and external audiences.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Executive-level leadership experience in strategic communications within a complex organization.
  • Proven success managing and executing multi-platform communications strategies for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams of creative professionals.
  • Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with a keen understanding of brand voice and audience engagement.
  • Strong decision-making, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Commitment to transparency, collaboration, and institutional mission.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in communications, media, publishing, or public affairs.
  • At least 5 years of progressive management experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience working in or with higher education institutions.

  • Develops and implements targeted campaigns that raise the visibility of Arts and Sciences programs, initiatives, research, and events.
  • Collaborates with departments, centers, and leadership across the School to ensure consistent messaging and brand cohesion.
  • Leverages data, analytics, and audience insights to refine strategies and measure success.
  • Ensures storytelling and messaging reflect the diversity, excellence, and innovation within A&S.

External Communications

  • Supports the Dean with speechwriting, media engagement, and public appearances.
  • Partners with Advancement to support fundraising and alumni engagement campaigns through compelling narratives and collateral.
  • Oversees promotional strategies for high-profile A&S events, including public lectures, academic conferences, and performances.
  • Manages digital platforms, including the A&S website, newsletters, and social media, to engage external audiences.
  • Serves as a key partner in crisis communication and reputation management in collaboration with Central Communications.

Internal Communications

  • Leads the development of internal communication strategies to enhance transparency, community, and engagement among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversees the creation of internal materials such as newsletters, reports, and announcements.
  • Promotes internal events that build connection and belonging within the School community.
  • Ensures timely and effective dissemination of critical updates and academic information.
