Job Summary

Applies professional engineering expertise across electrical and biological domains to perform moderately complex assignments in bionanotechnology and molecular engineering. Works at the intersection of microelectronics fabrication, molecular/microbial engineering, and DNA nanotechnology. Handles projects involving next-generation sequencing analysis, DNA origami design and characterization, and microscale device fabrication. Develops and implements protocols for biomolecular assembly, microelectronic integration, and analytical validation. Works on multidisciplinary assignments requiring analysis of complex biological and electrical systems, interpretation of multi-modal experimental data, and integration of diverse technical approaches. Collaborates with researchers to optimize experimental protocols and advance novel bioengineering platforms.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $78,900 - $167,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology (CMP) is a basic sciences department within the School of Medicine, and performs specific research and training. CMP provides administrative and financial services to 15 primary faculty members, 24 joint faculty members, 9 non-faculty academics, approximately 80 research and postdoctoral fellows, and 52 graduate students.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with next-generation sequencing protocols and bioinformatics analysis or related experience
  • Demonstrated experience with microelectronic fabrication techniques including photolithography, thin film position, and characterization
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques including PCR, DNA/RNA manipulation, and protein expression
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments involving biomolecular assembly and characterization
  • Proficiency with microscopy techniques including fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy
  • Experience with cleanroom operations and safety protocols
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain detailed laboratory records and prepare technical documentation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for troubleshooting complex interdisciplinary challenges
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team on complex multidisciplinary projects
  • Experience with electronics testing and measurement equipment
  • Knowledge of quality control procedures for both engineering and biological processes

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ph.D. degree
  • Experience with laboratory automation and high-throughput experimental workflows
  • Experience with DNA origami design and characterization techniques
  • Experience with cryo-EM sample preparation and analysis
