Job Summary

The Senior Animal Technician position is critical for the proper operation of IND Animal Facility. The purpose of this position is to provide technical support in regard to animal care and husbandry as well as take the lead on line development of transgenic rodent animal models used to study neurodegenerative diseases. The person in this position will have a critical role ensuring that daily animal health and husbandry procedures are performed as well as serve as the lead for line development.

The job will involve the ability to kneel, crawl, lift up to 20 lbs., carry/pull up to 60 lbs., push over 60 lbs., exposure to dust, fumes or gases, chemicals or toxic substances, latex; operating motor vehicles, use of protective equipment; move on hard surface for up to seven hours/day.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF is pursuing a cutting-edge blend of basic science and clinical medicine to provide outstanding care to those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Founded in 1999, the IND is committed to creating therapeutics that will halt diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and dementia resulting from traumatic brain injuries. The IND is poised to make serious contributions to this struggle at the frontier of neuroscience and medicine. The mission of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is to discover causes and develop cures for these illnesses with an innovative program of basic research and clinical medicine. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley B. Prusiner, MD.

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school, completion of training equivalent to the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification of American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and two years of animal care experience; OR high school graduation and three years of animal care experience in the care of animal species appropriate to the particular position; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • Able to effectively follow Standard Operating Procedures as it relates to Environmental Health and Safety procedures (i.e. proper use of Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Able to effectively and efficiently work well with other team-members in a high-throughput, dynamic, and physically-demanding environment
  • Able to be responsible for inspection, observation, and treatment of unusual or unexpected conditions that arise, requiring immediate action and notification to a supervisor. As well as repetitive activities that must occur daily
  • Able to keep clear, complete and accurate records of all procedures performed

Preferred Qualifications


  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification
  • Familiarity with biomedical research and animal models of disease
