Envision yourself impacting the healthcare system and helping members in the moments that matter in their care journey through the use of advanced automation technology. Medica has an opportunity to automate capabilities across the enterprise, further enabling better care while simultaneously dropping the cost of care. As the Director of AI Platforms, you will be leading the team and guide the individuals responsible for developing Medica's next-generation AI Platform on Azure's cloud infrastructure. The platform will be the engine on which teams across Medica "AI enable" their business functions. This role is highly involved and requires building a team from the ground up. You will oversee the implementation and upkeep of AI and machine learning cloud infrastructure, ensuring effective, secure, and safe AI outcomes. Much of your time will be spent building and working directly "hands on keyboard", first hand experience building cloud infrastructure at scale is a must. You will also hold primary responsibility for monitoring, maintaining, and initiating improvements/enhancements to key AI tools and platforms.

Key Accountabilities:



  1. AI Platform Development:


    • Leads the development and implementation of Medica's AI Platform using Azure's AI Foundry and other Azure services.
    • Builds a paved path for preparing data for generative AI use cases, fine-tuning foundation LLMs, and evaluating models for privacy, quality, safety, and reliability.
    • Determines and implements the agentic framework (e.g., autogen, Azure AI Agent Service) and strategy on which Medica can build its future.
    • Assesses vendor AI capabilities currently in-house and in the market more broadly, determining where or whether they should fit in our technology stack.


  2. AI Governance and Advocacy Participation:


    • Participates in AI governance activities in conjunction with legal, analytics, security, and architecture stakeholders to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
    • Drive adoption of the platform and enterprise AI tools through education and advocacy
    • Deliver Sandbox and experimentation tools for teams to explore potential AI use cases


  3. Model Deployment and Monitoring:


    • Oversees the deployment, management, and monitoring of AI models to ensure optimal performance and scalability.
    • Implements continuous improvement processes for AI models and platforms.


  4. Technical Leadership:


    • Provides hands-on technical leadership in building AI services that scale across Medica.
    • Leads small to medium-sized development teams, providing guidance and support to ensure successful project delivery.


  5. Stakeholder Collaboration:


    • Collaborates with key stakeholders to prioritize AI initiatives and communicate the impact of AI platform changes.
    • Provides technical consulting and advice on AI integration, reporting, and analytic capabilities.


  6. Staff Development:


    • Selects, motivates, trains, and retains a competent staff.
    • Develops career plans and balances workload and resources based on project and analytic demands.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience. Additionally, 8 years of experience in area of supervision with at least 3 years of management responsibility.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Hands on experience building generative AI capabilities.
  • Five years of leadership experience in technical roles.
  • Five years experience building and running cloud infrastructure at scale
  • Strong understanding of the current LLM landscape (i.e. leading foundation models, open vs closed source strategies, small language models and their place in the ecosystem, RAG vs fine tuning vs pre training and when to use, etc).
  • Basic understanding of agentic frameworks (i.e. Autogen, Azure AI Agent Service)
  • Basic understanding of the infrastructure required to run a basic RAG application.
  • Experience with Azure AI Foundry and other Azure services.
  • Five years of experience in the healthcare industry.
  • Track record of building and deploying scalable AI platforms.
  • Strong applied understanding of AI governance, model evaluation, and agentic frameworks


This position is an Office role, which requires an employee to work from any of our dedicated offices - Minnetonka, MN or Madison, WI, on average, 2+ times per week.

The full salary range for this position is $169,100-$289,900. Annual salary range placement will depend on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, education, work experience, applicable certifications and/or licensure, the position's scope and responsibility, internal pay equity and external market salary data. In addition to base compensation, this position may be eligible for incentive plan compensation in addition to base salary.
