Job Summary

Functions as a program manager or administrator of a psychiatric center or clinic.
Leads in planning and coordinating the work of a multidisciplinary treatment staff and research team. Establishes short and long-term program goals; revises / implements new procedures; conducts training for professional and paraprofessional staff members; and provides psychotherapeutic treatment with emphasis on the most severely disturbed and high-risk cases.

Clinical trial Study Psychologist (Lead Session Monitor): Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, and in collaboration with the Medical Monitor, Co-Investigators (Co-I's), Clinical Research Coordinators, and the assistant session monitors, this uniquely experienced provider will conduct manualized psychedelic drug-assisted therapy sessions and non-drug assisted sessions according to the study protocol as a Lead Session Monitor. They will clinically attend to study participants as they undergo experimental drug treatment sessions, which include the taking of vital signs, completing instruments to assess participant behavior, and intervening with verbal support or reaching out to the on-site medical provider in case of a psychiatric or medical emergency. Involves patient/research services for a range of mental health disorders, often severe including major depressive disorders, paranoia, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. Settings may be inpatient, outpatient or clinical research studies. Patient care may be provided by a combination of licensed clinicians, as well as counselors and crisis intervention specialists. Patients typically require routine assistance, treatment or a specialized and controlled environment. Primary emphasis on treatment and attempt where possible to help patients control their own lives in the outside world, with the use of a combination of psychiatric drugs and psychotherapy. Primary emphasis on clinical research trials in a medically complicated patient population, with the use of a combination of Schedule 1 psychedelic drugs and psychotherapy. Works with a multidisciplinary team to train and supervise other physicians and clinicians to conduct psychedelic drug-assisted sessions and treatment protocols in a research setting. Due to the medically complicated nature of the patient population, they work with a team of diverse physicians and clinicians to meet the needs of the patient population undergoing the treatment protocol. Directly trains and supervises assistant session monitors on the proper procedures and implementation of psychedelic assisted therapies and facilitation.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,300 - $268,900 (Annual Rate).
This position will be a 10% limited appointment with the salary range of $11,830 to $26,890

The Carhart-Harris Lab is an academic collective. It is comprised of a network of collaborators linked to Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, Ralph Metzner Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of California San Francisco. The core team is located at The University of California San Francisco but our wider network is distributed across the world. Carhart-Harris Lab values principles of Open Science, including open access, resources, data, methods, and hypothesis sharing. We are driven by a desire to better understand, using the scientific method. Our core focus is on the nature of consciousness and mental health, including how mental health can be positively impacted on via psychedelic therapy and what its mechanisms of action are. Psychedelic compounds serve as focal scientific tools in this endeavor.

Required Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in related area and minimum 10 years' experience or equivalent combination of training/experience
  • Advanced skill in directing behavioral health program / center including developing program goals and directing research.
  • In-depth knowledge of applicable laws and ethical standards associated with profession.
  • Extensive knowledge and applied background in psychotherapeutic treatment for patients with severe mental health conditions as well as psychedelic drug assisted facilitation
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication. Highly advanced active listening, consultation, and public speaking skills.
  • Highly advanced interpersonal skills to motivate, engage and inspire commitment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced knowledge of business software, specialized applications and electronic medical records systems used in hospitals / clinics.

License/Certification


  • Licensed in behavioral health discipline.
  • CITI Good Clinical Practices certification
  • CITI Human Subject Protection certification
