Position Summary
The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Library seeks an efficient and service-oriented individual to provide chat reference, collections, and administrative support to the UIC Library of the Health Sciences (LHS) in Chicago. The qualified applicant will demonstrate an interest and ability to work in a diverse environment and meet the learning needs of a diverse body of students, faculty, and clinicians.

Reporting to the Head of Information Services and Research (ISR), the Chat Service Associate is responsible for providing virtual chat reference to library patrons. They will also serve as a back up to the Chat Service Manager as needed for scheduling and administration of the chat service and provide administrative support to the Research Services and Resources department.

Work schedule is M-F 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. during the academic year. Hours during the summer and intersessions may vary slightly.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Chat Service
  • Provide reference assistance directly to library patrons via the LibChat platform.
  • Effectively refer complex questions to liaisons librarians.
  • Work closely with library colleagues from other departments to resolve queries.
  • Administrative Support for ISR department.
  • Provide general administrative support to the Information Services and Research department.
  • Triage and respond to reference questions via chat, email, and phone.
  • Maintain department statistics, contribute to the annual report and assist with department-wide projects._
  • Assist with the creation of reference and instructional materials, such as LibGuides, slide decks, and video tutorials.
  • Participate in department and Library-wide collections projects and initiatives.
  • Chat Service Administration.
  • Serve as back-up to the Chat Service Manager for scheduling, monitoring calendars, and administration of the chat service.
  • Maintain internal guides and documentation for reference practices and protocols.
  • 5% Participate in Special Projects and other Duties as Assigned


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.
    2. Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:
      1. work experience in a library or equivalent setting.
      2. college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table
        • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
        • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
        • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
        • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)


    Preferred Qualifications

    • Excellent written communication skills.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts.
    • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
    • Ability to take initiative and solve problems creatively.
    • Strong Attention to Detail.
    • Library and/or research experience providing friendly and professional customer service.
