Job Description |
ECU Department of Transit is currently seeking several Vehicle Operators to perform the following duties:
- Complete a training course involving, but not limited to, online training, classroom training, written work, quizzes/tests, and behind-the-wheel training.
- Familiarize self with system and safety features; geography and roadways of assigned routes and service areas; traffic rules, regulations, and laws.
- Operate a transit vehicle to pick up, transport, and discharge passengers while adhering to the route schedule and maintaining a pleasant and courteous manner.
- Provide information on bus services to customers, including bus schedules, routes, and local information.
- Receive and transmit two-way radio communications regarding accidents, incidents, emergencies, criminal activities, or any other authorized ECU Transit business while utilizing judgment and discretion to ensure customer and individual safety.
- Perform vehicle operations at variable times of day and night. May work outside regular business hours as required by service demands.
- Operate a wheelchair lift, secure passengers' mobility devices, and assist passengers with disabilities with boarding, riding, and alighting in a safe manner including pushing a manual wheelchair up a steep ramp if necessary.
- Write reports and complete forms as required. May prepare detailed written reports concerning accidents/incidents, breakdowns, and mechanical defects as required at the end of a shift.
- Complete ongoing training courses for professional development provided by ECU Transit during the duration of employment.
- Work at least 18-20 hours per week, depending on service demands.
- Work is primarily between 06:00 am to 01:00 am for both bus and On-Demand operators including some nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.
While Transit is considered a campus location, our office is located off main-campus at 285 Easy St, Greenville, NC 27834. Students are expected to have their own transportation for opening and closing shifts.

Preferred (Majors, Experience, GPA, etc.) |
- Must be able to pass a background check.
- Must be age 18 or older.
- Must have held a valid NC Driver's License for a minimum of one year.
- Applicants with out-of-state licenses must have the ability to switch to a North Carolina Driver's License.
- Driver's License must NOT be a full provisional license.
- Must have a clean driving history including:
- No more than 3 active points on Motor Vehicle Record.
- No moving violations or at-fault accidents within the last year.
- No suspensions, or convictions of reckless driving, or driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other controlled substances (DWI/DUI) on record.
- No convictions of any crime involving the illegal use, possession, sale, manufacture, distribution, or transportation of a controlled substance, drug, narcotic, or alcoholic beverage.
- Must have a minimum 2.3 GPA.
- Must have no drug or alcohol related violations with the university within the last two years.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and continue to pass random drug and/or alcohol testing throughout the duration of employment for bus operators.
- Must be able to obtain a CDL Medical Card and Commercial Learner's Permit for bus operators.
- Fees associated are reimbursed after completion of the training program
