Soybean Trait Introgression Technician

This individual contributor role will apply knowledge to contribute to the development of a soybean trait introgression program. This role will be based at our Winterville location and travel consistently to Leland for related work activities.

What you will do:



  • Effectively complete daily greenhouse activities such as pot and soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, leaf-tissue sampling, plant maintenance, thinning, staking, pest control, watering, dry down, and harvest.
  • Ensure optimal plant growth through plant health monitoring, diagnosis and treatment of suboptimal plant conditions, pro-active control of pests, and maximization of seed quality and yield.
  • Manage assigned projects to meet data, seed quality, and seed production quantity requirements within specified deadlines.
  • Exercise a high level of attention to detail to successfully implement assigned projects from planting through harvest and clean out.
  • Identify and recommend areas for improvement to maximize growth facility space efficiency.
  • Introgress trait package(s) in soybean via backcrossing method.
  • Follow quality assurance and quality control procedures including separation of plant types, traits, and herbicide platforms as well as order of entry to guarantee quality pure seed production in a fast paced and high throughput environment.
  • Effectively follow defined standard operating procedures including trait introgression procedures as well as nutrient/watering procedures.
  • As appropriate, contribute to soybean trait introgression protocol development, maintenance, and revision.
  • Actively follow safety protocols, wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Manage pest control using sound Integrated Pest Management strategies according to Nutrien Ag Solutions guidelines and Pesticide Application Regulations.
  • Collaborate across the breeding team through active engagement with molecular lab and field colleagues.

  • Complete additional responsibilities to meet business objectives.



What you will bring:



  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or Agriculture is required. Equivalent relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
  • 2 years of experience in greenhouse operations, plant breeding, or soybean research is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite with particular focus using Excel.
  • A highly collaborative approach to work with enthusiasm for contributing to a small team environment.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of greenhouse equipment (pot fillers, lighting, climate control systems, and irrigation).
  • Working knowledge of soybean growth stages is essential.
  • Willingness to obtain pesticide application license.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a greenhouse environment with long periods of standing and walking as well as frequent stooping and bending at the waist.
  • Ability to lift40 lbs occasionally (examples soil, potting mix, fertilizer, and pots)
  • Previous experience in soybean crossing and artificial hybridization is an asset.
