Clinical Engineer

The clinical engineer provides engineering services to medical and research areas including selection, acquisition and service of medical devices, project management, technical investigations of clinical incidents, clinical/technical problem-solving, device design and solution of novel system and technical problems. May lead a project team comprised of engineers and technicians. Educates medical and technical staff on medical technologies. Leads quality improvement activities and suggests innovative solutions to technical problems.

  • With some guidance, leads projects through all stages of its lifecycle. Works with a multidisciplinary team of internal and external customers and stakeholders to identify clinical needs and workflow, coordinates the purchase, manages the installation ensuring consistent device type configuration, helps organize the in-service training, plans for the handoff to day-to-day operations, and documents the project using department project guidelines.
  • Develop understanding of clinical workflow and practice, and map the selection, configuration, implementation, and training of new and existing technology to align with clinical workflow and care delivery.
  • Assists in capital equipment purchases and preparation of budgets. Works with vendor and MGB Contracts on procurement of new equipment.
  • May be a technical resource or Subject Matter Expert for clinical systems, connected devices or infrastructure components. Performs, and may provide direction on, the completion of maintenance activities related to clinical systems and infrastructure components. Follows established processes for connected devices.
  • May be a technical resource or Subject Matter Expert for clinical technologies. Establish relationships with vendors and stakeholders. Using a computer database, sets example in documentation of work performed in terms of quality, thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness. Documents and maintains accurate and current inventory records of all replacement and repair parts.
  • May participate in the development and delivery of training for staff competency improvement in the areas of clinical application, use, and operation of medical devices and network systems.
  • Evaluates the safety and efficacy of medical devices according to the manufacturer documentation. Investigates cost-effectiveness of alternatives to current technologies to meet the hospital's clinical workflow.
  • Suggests and helps implement strategies for management of technology in assigned clinical areas, leading quality improvement activities where applicable.
  • Provides high quality technical and customer support and troubleshooting.
  • Under supervision and guidance, investigates clinical incidents involving medical devices and prepares and files appropriate reports, disseminates information regarding possible unintended outcomes and implements corrective action.
  • Maintains knowledge of and advises department and hospital personnel of codes and regulations regarding clinical devices and support facilities. Familiar with MEMP.
  • Maintains a proficient level of Clinical Engineering principles and expertise to act as a resource to the department, area, or hospital.
  • Serves and participates on internal committees or working groups.
  • With some supervision, performs Quality and Safety tasks i.e Model evaluations, IRBs, and Recalls.
  • Provides on-call response to administrative, management and/or technical problems.
  • May require travel to hospital and clinical locations as part of routine responsibilities
  • Performs other related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Biomedical Engineering, or other relevant engineering fields from an accredited university required.
  • Work experience in a hospital or healthcare setting is preferred, industries of similar use of engineering principles, or industries with similar regulatory requirements and knowledge of emerging technologies.


Skills

  • Knowledge of medical instrumentation, signal processing and clinical workflows of medical instrumentation and systems. Ability to be a technical expert on clinical technologies. Possesses a high level of understanding of electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles.
  • Organizational and time management skills.
  • Understanding of anatomy and physiology and the application of clinical technology to the human body.
  • Ability to diagnose and solve technical and/or system problems
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of electronic, mechanical and/or system design and applications' principles.
  • Computer literacy and the use of word processing, and spreadsheets. Ability to perform novel queries of a CMMS. Emphasis on accuracy and attention to detail
  • Understanding of networked systems and communication. Performing engineering duties for clinical systems within department.
  • Demonstrates technical skills, including writing, presentation and teaching. Ability to teach other technical and clinical personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions when applicable.
  • High degree of accuracy, consistency and attention to detail.
  • Human relations and interpersonal skills of a level as necessary to oversee technical staff in a complex environment under general direction.
  • Ability to lead, interact and communicate
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards for maintenance of medical equipment and systems
  • Ability to source, understand and manipulate data to assist with decision making processes.
  • Ability to complete a project with supervision including Clinical needs validation, budgeting, planning, training and implementation. Generate reference material where needed.
  • Completes projects of minimal to moderate complexity.
